6-250 starting loads and other stuff.

Here is where I'm at. I shoot short range Benchrest and therefore, have a few barrels sitting around that are not up to grade for competition or even club matches but would make a great barrle for a truck gun. I make my own bullets 64gr - 68gr and have a box that I put culled bullets in that I will not shoot in a match, but would be great for coyotes and p-dogs or other things that might offer themselves. I'm leaning towards chambering one of my old barrels (1-14t) into a 6-250 where would I start in load dev. Give me some common powders and starting loads. What vel. might I expect? This barrel will eventually be put on a trued r700 action. Thanks

Here is Hodgdon's web site.

It does list loads for 70 grain bullets in this caliber. The only other source of data that I have been able to find is Nosler Reloading Manual Number One. Best of luck to you.

Robert Whitley has written several articles on the 6-250. He posts on this forum under RCW3. He uses Varget in his load data, but most of that that is with bullets in the 105-108 grain range. Most people around here shoot the cartridge across the course or in midrange matches with 105-107 bullets. They are using alot of H4350. Great shooting cartridge and evidently easy to get to shoot well.

36.0g N135 with 65g FB = 3490 fps, in my 8 twist shoots really great, one hole groups. This is a fireforming load for my 6-250 I came up with since I have a ton of SR BR bullets too. I shoot the 105+ bullets in her in F Class comps.

Had a 6/250 made up in 1986 for 300 metre ISU competition. Stainless McGowen 12 twist barrel, 722 action, Fajen prone stock, Anschutz fittings, Central sights, Timney trigger. Very accurate with 70 gr Sierra MKing, W748, AA2520, IMR4320, H4895. Chronos at 3300fps.

Started to lose accuracy recently so took it to a barrelsmith who looked it over with his borescope. When his eyebrows disappeared into his hairline, I knew it was time for a new barrel. Will stick with the slow twist for lighter bullets. Will use my 6AI if I want to shoot 107s.

I've used the 6-250 for about 11 yrs. now. Some used the 6-250 in hunter class benchrest at one time because it met the case volume requirement. My barrel is 14 twist for 68 gr. bullets with a tight neck chamber. I use H414 and the old 68 gr. Berger MEF's (buy alot of bullets if your gun likes them) and shoot 3650 fps. and can easily go higher but I haven't full sized a case in years. This makes an excellent varmint round. I think the current trend is to use the 6-250 with heavier bullets/slower twist but I have a 6mm Remington for that. My 6-250 has countless rounds down the tube and will still group under 3/8" in a hunting stock.

Thanks for the information. The Hodgdon manuel looks good but a little on the conservative side, go figure. I've got almost all of the powders they listed so I won't have a hard time coming up with something. Just needed a place to start. Now we just need to see how a BR bullet works on a coyote!

I have a couple 6-250's. The idea was to shoot varmints with a 6mm bullet at good velocity, using less powder than a .243 for less heat and less fouling. It does that.

One barrel is a 28"K&P, the other is a 25" Schneider. Both I believe are 12" twist. Chamber has .270"nk and no freebore. One gun uses PMC 22-250 brass, the other has WW 250Savage necked down and turned. It took longer to make these guns shoot than I'm used to, but now that they're tweeked they shoot well.

I could only find one sheet with chrono numbers. The load in that gun is 41.1/760 with a 65gr bullet = 3689......this particular bullet is a custom boattail with very short bearing surface. That same gun also likes a 70TNT with 37.5/760. The other one shoots 36.5/844 and a 55BT.....it unzips a rockchuck very nicely. Both guns shoot groups with all holes touching or overlapping, but as I said, they're a bit finicky with loads. *****Don't!!! start with these loads....begin 2 or 3 grains lower and work up.

It's a good cartridge and feeds well through the 700 action. Makes a good hunting/truck gun. But a 6BR with the same light 55-70gr. bullets is not much slower, more accurate, stupid easy to make shoot, and uses less powder. The long barrel gun is a single shot and will probably be rechambered to 6BR.
