5R 300 win mag bullet recommendations

I recently picked up a Remington 700 mil spec 5r rifled 300 win mag. It has a 1-10 twist. I picked it up to get into long range shooting. It seems to like lighter bullets than I want to use. First handloads I used 168 amax because it was the heaviest I had locally. Would like to use 190 to 210. What do you guys think. Attached is a group from today. Optic is a trijicon 5-20x50 mildot.

I'm very fond of the 215 Bergers in any 30 cal that will twist them, I'm dialing in a 5R 300 Win right now and it's looking good.

+1
The 215 is a great long range bullet. As stated the 190 SMK usually works well. It all depends on what you are trying to get out of it, and how far you are shooting. The 230 Hybrid is an awesome long range bullet, but no reason to take the abuse of recoil if not needed.

I'm setting this gun up to take a long range class that will be shooting out to 1200 yards. That's why I'm looking at 190 and up.

I would try some Sierra 200 gr MK with Retumbo powder. Should be able to get in the ball park of 2900ish fps and that should get you to 1200 yards pretty well.

Sure there is; if you want to take advantage of 230 Hybrid's outstanding ballistics. I shoot these in a heavy (22#) .300 WSM F-Open rifle and recoil is not uncomfortable but requires considerable effort obtaining consistent tracking. [br]
The problem for OP is that the bullet is so long, almost 1.7", that it requires freebore that using shorter bullets can be a problem.

Not to be taken out of context, I also asked the distance he would be shooting :) Being that he is now indicating 1200, my response is 215 or 230 Hybrid, whichever shoots better. I totally agree about the 230s outstanding ballistics.

Its a multi week course that works you out to 1200. That's why I picked a 300 win mag. I didn't think my .308 would do it as easy.

My rifle was built for "practical field matches" ;) - the scope (MK4-M3) on it is internally range calibrated for the 190 SMK at 2950... to 1,200 meters... you range the target, dial it, and hit it - even a cave man can do it. Twist is 1:10"

When working up the load - it was easy peasy - I just increased the load until I had the velocity I needed - all the groups along the way were the same size.

It is an easy bullet to develop loads for - it is not fussy or finicky, and it's "accuracy window" is "anywhere" if your rifle is decent! :) :)

You will like it, and it won't beat the crap out of you.

I'm assuming you bought this to kill live things with so the only 2 bullets I would recommend from personal experience would be a 208 amax and 215 hybrid. H-1000 around 75-78 grains.

Assuming you got a 300WM to get max performance at distance, and knew there would be recoil to deal with:

230 Berger OTM (of the Berger 230s, I tried this one first and it worked great, stuck with it)
H-1000 (couldn't get Retumbo to work with other heavies to I gave up on it)
215M

190 Sierra Matchking with Reloader 22 favorite
Or Hornady 208 AMax

220 Sierra MK with H1000 Hard on throat area
230 OTM berger.......h1000 .......best past 1K yards

I have the same 5R gun in 300 Win
My 5R also likes liter bullets the 180gr AB or Etip with RL22 is a good load

This rifle was made for the 220 sierra MK or 230 berger OTM
Military uses H1000 with the 220 MK but better performance with the 230 OTM.

Curious as to what you powder and OAL was on this load
