5mm Remington Mag?

I picked up a 5mm Remington Mag 10"barrel for a T/C many years ago along as part of a package with a 10" 22 Hornet K and 44 Mag barrels. I have never configured my Contender as a pistol, but it was originally a pistol when got it. I converted it to a 223 carbine as a pack rifle and been that way for 30 plus years. I was thinking about making up some 22 Hornet K reloads when I rediscovered the 5mm barrel. I know one company makes 5mm ammo but not available local for me to buy.

Anything special about the 5mm RM? A friends dad had one in the 80s in a Remington 591 that I remember being a real shooter. That is the only time I was ever around one.

Thanks for input, Tim

I have no actual experience with the 5mm, but I have a good bit of hunting experience with the 22 mag. I never wanted a 17 enough to buy one. But I have always thought, and/or wished, the 5mm was king rather than the 17HMR. I skimmed the Chuchhawks article below and what he says about the 5mm's energy backs up my thinking. Today's technology might even get some more FPS out of it. I'm always a dreamer I guess.

Grafs had a shipment last Jan or Feb. I'm not sure if they have any left though. It was Aguila and if you bought 3 or more boxes it was $23 and change per box of 50.
I came into a 591 not long before that with some older Remington ammo included.
The Remington ammo shoots ok, but I haven't broke into the Aguila yet.

Remington and Remington peters 38 gr HP power-lokt 2100 FPS $3.27 /50 ct. 10 yrs later you could not find ammo in Louisville. Explosive as a 55gr SX on much smaller game. Starlings and pigeons were a ball, within range!

I love the 5mm but as mentioned, Aguila is the only source and it's spotty. I make sure to buy plenty when they do make a run. It's great on pests and reasonably close p-dogs. I wasn't even thought of yet when it was a new kid on the block but I have always wondered why it flopped.

I don't if you can still get it but there was a conversion called the 5mm Craig. I think it was just a center-fire 5mm rem.

Brother-In-Law has 2 of the Remingtons, killed many groundhogs with Remington ammo.at 75yds.
Did not want to pay $50/50 rounds 5-7 years ago for available Remington 5mm.
Bought some Aguila 5mm, was noticeably less accurate.
Seem to remember at that time reading an article indicating the diameter of the bullet was undersized.
Maybe the newer Aquila ammo is an improvement.
Really a fun rifle to shoot.

It really hammered groundhogs under 100yds too.

I would want a caliber so that I can walk in almost any store and buy brass or loaded ammo. Maybe a Hornet or Hornet wildcat.

I'm not familiar with the action of the original Rem 5 Mag. Would it be sufficient to handle the pressure and diameter of Hornet variants, or the various other iddy biddy centerfire wildcats?? jd

I don't think the bolt would be big enough to fit the hornet case rim.
Then the change over to cf would most likely be a no go.

The 591 the 5mm Mag was chambered in was the same action as the 581 series and a few of them have been chambered in Hornet, Bee and I have heard of some chambered in 17 MKIV
