53gr V-max what twist in 22-250

Scott,

It should be a 1x14", but it'd be worth checking for yourself just to make sure. Yes, it'll stabilize the 53s just fine, with room to spare.

Back in the day when everybody shipped their 22-250's with 14tw the 52g-53g slugs were the 'go to' ones for accuracy. A 12tw will work up to the 64g Berger flat base, iffy on anything longer/heavier than that, a 14tw is *usually* (but not always) good for 55's as well.

Your chances of success are pretty good.

They shoot great for me in a TC 1:12 (22"), but were all over the target in a friends T3 Super Varmint 1:14 (~24"), both 22-250. The 53 vmax is a very long 53 gr class bullet.

Being the owner of a couple 1in14's,I would go with a 1in12 for sure in case you cant get the lighter bullets all the time.

My 14 twist Tikka would not stabilize the 53 Vmax. It would shoot the 64 Berger but the 53 Vmax went through the paper crooked. 12 twist is the recommended minimum.

Probably a 14" twist - my 22 250 (same twist) doesn't shoot bullets heavier than 50 grain very well but a fellow shooter has the same rifle and his likes the 55 grain bullets so go figure! You just have to try it but if you haven' purchased any bullets yet I'd definitely try the 50 grainers first.

A 53 gr. Vmax will not stabilize in a 14 twist barrel even at .22-250 velocities. Bullet length is approximately .830". Running the gyroscopic stability calculator included in Quick Target gives an Sg Of .73. This is using standard atmospheric data. Bare minimum Sg is 1.0 and 1.4 is about ideal. Standard atmospheric uses 59 degrees and sea level elevation. In the past I have tried 55 grain Blitzkings in the .22-250 and accuracy was an inch at a hundred and larger. Switching to a shorter bullet brought it back to where it normally was at half inch stuff and better. When the temperature gets cold here in Wisconsin those long bullets just don't work. I have seen it bad enough that they actually keyhole at 100 yds. The calculator shows a 12 twist giving a .99 Sg-still not really enough for good stability.

26.2gr IMR 8208, max load using Hornady data. I do use a CCI 450 SR mag primer though. 3180-3200fps out of a 18" Rock River varmint

My Tikka T3 1x14 twist also keyholed 53gr V-Maxes. I was bummed because I bought a bunch and thought they would be a shoe in for accuracy. Lucky that 2 of my 223's like them! T.S.
