53gr Nosler varmageddon twist rate

DLT

Silver $$ Contributor
Run up on the 53gr version of the nosler varmageddon at a gun show this morning. Question is will the stabilize in a 1:14 twist barrel ? Nosler doesn’t list the twist rate for that particular bullet. Going to load some for a 22-250. Years ago I tried the 53vmax in a 14 twist and it was no bueno but my 1:12 savage loves them. Thanks

ETA: For any non-flat base bullet you need to know, the research is mostly the length and the BC.
With the Berger Stability calculator or the JBM web site you can then estimate the stability (SG).

The JBM site has a bullet length listing that helps with the research and most manufacturers publish their BC to either the G1 or G7.

I think the 53 Varmageddon is BC is G1 of 0.303 and is 0.830" long. Your SG is way below 1.5 , so that would say your twist should be more like a 1:9

Thanks. According to the berger calculator it’s not even close. I don’t see how that can be. It is what it is I guess

I just called Nosler and they verified that the minimal recommended twist rate for the 53 grain Varmageddon bullet is 1:12.

Berger says their calculator will not work with flat base bullets. Are the 53 gr flat base?

I have shot 52's and 53's in both a 12 and 14 twist, all good. The 14 twist should be fine if you are going to drive them north of 3400 fps.

They shoot fine in my Cooper w/12 twist. Accurate too. They just aren't fast enough to make a prairie dog ''P O P'' from my 222 or 223 like 40s do
