52 gr bullets on hogs

sirs,
given a volocity of say 3750 fps just how far can a kill be done on a average size groundhog.i am shooting berger hp bullets out of my 22 br shilen.am thinking of a 22 cheeta or 22 250 ackly with the 40 degree shoulder.

The farthest kill I made on a groundhog was 400 yds. +/- with a .22-250 A.I. shooting a 50 grn. Nosler Ballistic Tip @ 4100 ft/s. I still remember the shot and the set up. The hog was in a soybean field about twenty yds. from a treeline. I lazed him and the reading either said 399 or 400 yds.; it was that close. The hit was center of mass and he just rolled over. I've taken alot of hogs at distances from 200 to 400 yds. with that set-up. The barrel is a 1-14" Hart light varmint on a trued Remington action with a Jewell trigger that breaks @ 4 oz. The scope is a Leupold VXlll 6.5 X 20 30mm. side focus. The .22-250 A.I. is a great critter cartridge. A center hit on a crow will vaporize it with a black puff of feathers.

Sounds like a nice rig. If i were going for LR with a rig like that i'd opt for one of the JLK Low Drags. Here's the specs on them--

52/14 twist/BC-.302
60/12/.339
65/10/.397

With a big 22/10 twist and the 65 JLK on board, LR chucks'll be in big trouble.

Thanx,
I'll keep the suggestion in mind as I have a 1-12" .22-250 A.I. barrel that has never been shot and a <300 rd. 1-8" .22-250 A.I. that I'll be playing with in the near future. I love the Acley's for varmints as they do the job in a spectacular fashion.

I had a couple 22-250 AI's, and loved them both. 40 gr. Sierra HP, then 40 Ball. Tip were TEERRIFIC coyote fur bullets to about 400 or so, then the wind took them wherever it wanted to. Had a TK Lee 3-dot scope in a Tasco 3.5-10X WCP that wasn't too bad a scope really. The dots were for 0-300, 400, then 500 yds. Killed a couple 500 yd. coyotes with that setup too, just before the lasers came out. Certainly wasn't the best long-range system, but just great on fur.

at 3720fps, a 52 bullet should be fine on a hog out to 500yds, maybe farther out if you can hit it. i think the berger you speak of is one of the MEF bullets? i used a 52 sierra match in a .223 one summer, it was fine close in, but the velocity just wasn't there to open bullet up on out there. hit a small g-hog at 424 yds, it flipped him over and rolled him 2-3 times, and he took off back into his hole. found blood, sure it killed him, but you can't count them if they get back in hole!! never had a problem with that same bullet out of a 22-250, so the ackley would be even better. p.s. stick with the bergers.
