510

I have been working on an old Remington 510 target master that was my uncle's.... It's an old school iron sight gun of course... At 25 yards today it put 7 rounds in a group I could cover with my pinky nail , so it's shooting pretty good but the trigger is WAY heavy and I mean WAY heavy.... Does anybody know anything about these old .22s..? Is there a way to take some pounds off the trigger or is a trigger job the only way..?

Thanks in advance as always...
Shawn

Yeah, they had heavy triggers. About all you can do safely is to polish all bearing surfaces to smooth it up and keep the mechanism lightly oiled (strongly suggest Hobo Oil). Just be very careful to not change the angles and engagement points. Mine came from my dad. He bought it in 1948, I believe, for $11...brand new. It has trained several generations of kids including my own and is now ready for my grand-kids. I got mine down to about 3# with very little creep. Wouldn't want it much lighter for kids. And yes, those old guns can still shoot.

Thanks for the suggestion , I may smooth it up a bit although I am tempted to leave it as a trainer since I have like five other .22 at this point.... I was shocked at how well it shot especially since I am at the age were I see two tops of the front sight on iron sights anymore , sucks..... I am also tempted to give it some love but I have so many irons in the fire anymore it's hard to start another project.... That doesn't mean I can't leave it for the future... Once again thank you for your time....

It is a twin to the first rifle I ever shot as a kid. At 25 yards even with 72 yr old days it pretty much shoots in the same hole foe first 5 shots. Then the old eyes fuzz a bit. I would love to see what it will do at 50 yrs with a scope. I have an idea it would put a lot of current .22s to shame, in spite of the trigger.
