50s 52s 53s 55s vs wind

Ozshot, quad work is reserved mainly for getting around the tracks not so much the most direct overland route as any hillier country is well tracked for getting around mustering and the like. My spotlighting is mainly for rabbits for the cat and keeping on top of your darn nocturnal Aussie possums our greatest pest species around Auckland where we are. Mainly 22 work and now both are in good numbers again, rabbits in particular, the 10/22 has been dragged out rather than the more accurate bolt action Anschutz.
Never had the chance to shoot Roo's although we did get a few foxes when visiting friends in WA.

What's your typical nightly Roo tally ?
My average is down this year as it’s been really wet, unlike anything any of the old fellas can even remember!!! So I’ve been getting bogged a lot and the grass are up to the door in most places so it’s quiet hard to find the Roos once you have shot them but I’m still running around 40 a night. I own my own chiller and the exporter/processor sends a semi trailer once a week to pick up from me and about 5 other sites around the place once a week. Depends on what orders they have but they will buy kangaroo, deer, pigs, goat and even hare at times

Yes. Since you are fireforming we can extrapolate from the 223 data. I’ll crunch some numbers, you try to get an actual velocity and we will meet in the middle.

So taking a wild guess what your velo would be fireforming AI brass:

With 27.4gr of 8208 at 3450fps (great powder choice by the way)
zeroed 1.6" high at 100 yards, ....
holding center of the ear hole (Bullet will be up or down 10cm max from cross hair )...
you will hit roo out to 250 yards with the 52 HP with your BC.

You will be on the high side (3-5 cm over the crosshairs) a majority of that distance (75 yards to 200 yards) so put it on the jaw and let it rip.

If you want it to be a laser beam and hit +/- 1" ( 2" diameter)
Zero at 0.9" up at 100 and put the cross hairs on them out to 209 yards - With this zero you will be dead on a 184 yards and falling off of the table after 220.

Metric units if that helps...

Once you get real velocity we can tweak this a bit but it wont change much 100 fps either side of this. If you get it up to 3650-3700 in the AI.... we will want to re visit the calcs.

Nice and of those 40/night what are your hit/kill percentages of shots fired ?
I ask because you say your are using mixed brass, something that never works out well for reloads.
The case brand variability is not conducive to the precision accuracy you require for something like the 0.75 MOA accuracy you need for headshots at the ranges you're working with.
So 5 nights of at least 40/week means you're loading at least 200/week so would you have enough of one brand of brass to see you through to the next loading session ?
I suspect with just one type of brass loaded your hit/kill percentages will rise along with your confidence in the rifle and your ability to precisely place shots.

Ozshot try and get a hold of some sierra super roos. $185 for 1000 projies plus frieght hopefully your in 1 of the good states that you can get these posted to you. Nothing wrong with putting roos in the chiller did it our many years fulltime and still I still shoot today with another mate of mine . Enjoy

Thanks so much Jeff, pretty interesting that my usual zero of 1 to 1-1/2 inch at 100m wasn’t too far out!! I’ve really wanted to get these last round shot out and chronograph but I’m just waiting for the damn rain to stop. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can

I should have enough after this next run of shells to split the cases into thier correct batches, I’ve heard it made a big difference but when I first started I loaded 5 of each and shot the groups and it didn’t differ enough to Warrant separating them…. I may not have had a large enough sample test by your take on it so I’ll give it a go. I only usually shoot 3-4 nights a week but when I load I load 100 at a time and let them build up
In my box so when I don’t have time I can still head to work and not worry. My hit/kill ratio is actually a bit harder to work out then it should be as there is a lot of factors that weigh on it that aren’t to do with ballistics, Example, wind and distance judgement calls early in the night till you have it picked, plus depending how many nights I’ve worked and how tired I am affects my aim and even as you know once you start your trigger squeeze on a head shot if the Roo turns or moves up or Down it’s too late to stop once you have committed, also where the barrel life is up too as it will really affect it if I’m waiting on a gun new with the barrel shot out. So it’s really hard to pin down an actual number. But Ive definitely had nights where I’ve nearly missed nothing and others where I’ve gotten out and wanted to wrap my rifle round a tree and head home cause I can’t hit anything haha
