50Gr Hornady SP SX Max Velocity in a 12 twist??

What do you think is the max velocity of a 50Gr .224 Hornady SP SX bullet witha 12 twist barrel-- do not want to blow them up.

I have used them in 22-250 with 38 grains of H380, 24 inch factory rem barrel, and sometimes they were great, then sometimes about 1/2 way to the target the vapor trail went all over the place and no hit was seen. Same load in a Hart barrel, never a problem. For what it is worth I think the Hart just was smooth enough that the bullet stayed together.

H2OBUG, I plan to but have not done so yet. Was going to try both the 50's and 55's in my Rem 700 that has a 14" twist. The 55's are pretty short for their weight. You may already know this, but Hornady used to include a small note in the boxes of SPSX bullets that read "Hornady SX bullets are for use in cartridges of velocity up to 3500 f.s. Accurate and deadly at 222 velocities they are NOT intended for cartridges of higher speed". The 8th edition Hornady manual says 3400 fps for the SPSX and 4000/3900 for the 50 & 55 SP bullets.

Good luck, Peter.

yea-- I am shooting them in my .223 roughly 3200-3150 in a 12 twist-- just wondering if they would stay together in the 14" twist 22-250-- May just stick with the thicker jackets

Thanks again for the feedback

I found that the simple, humble Hornady 55 SP shot very very very well in my 40XB 22-250. I only switched to the pointy plastic tipped bullets (giving up a bit of group) for the BC. At the $ cost, sometimes I wonder why.
??? :o
