50 BMG

Well, the Forum said "Big Stuff".

I just got a new shooter, a AR-50 for Christmas. Yes, wife is a real keeper!

My questiong concerns feeding the beast. I see surplus powders for considerably less than "normal" powders. Cost is $36 for 8 pounds as compared to over $100. Anyone with experience using surplus powders?

Are they pull down powders or just surplus never-loaded powders?

George

Most are pull downs and are a bad deal unless you just want to make noise.

Stick with 20N29.

If you are going to shoot 50 BMG you should join FCSA. Get their magazine and be able to join their Forum. If you don't know who they are, or want details, let me know.

Welcome to the Land of the 50! Have had one for 3 years and mine likes the AA8700,230-ish grains) with Hornady 750grAMAX seated just off the lands, and the only primer I'll touch it off with is the CCI35!
This combo is capable of 3.3"-ish 10round groups at 500yards,longest I can shoot on).

The FCSA is a great group, and their publication of "Very High Power",magazine plus so much more), is a good way to learn a lot of information!

Thanks for the responses. We,4 of us) have ordered some new H5010, CCI #35 primers, and an assortment of bullets to get started, new ball and AP pulled). New LC cases are also on order. I think that the Anti's will hit the 50 pretty soon so we ordered a bunch.

Will wait on the VISA bills before the Hornady A-Max's are ordered.

The "anti's" have already hit hard in several States and are working on others as we speak. Don't think for a minute that "stocking up" will solve all your problems when they get to you.

Another very good reason to join FCSA, IMHO.

Joined FCSA before I got my rifle. I also understand about the anti's and total confiscation/ban.

Anyone have some ballistic tables on the AP and Ball round? I have "The Complete 50 Caliber Sniper Course" book but I do not find data for these cartridges.

A source that has the tables with BC would be great. A bullet description of sufficient detail that I can use to program it into Quickload along with data on Hodgon's H 5010 powder with be wonderful.

I too recommend joining the FCSA.
As for bulk powder, I haven't used it but I can't remember any FCSA members complaining about it. The VV 20N29 (and 24N41) is complained about with respect to temperature sensitivity and changes in muzzle velocity given the same load. I would suggest that most FCSA match guys are using H50BMG or RL50 and these powders are well liked because of their temperature stability and overall consistency.
