5-round AR Magazines

Not wanting to hijack the Remington 700 thread, I am wondering if anyone knows of a maker of a 5-round AR-style magazine (.223/5.56) that isn't just a 'blocked' version of a 10-round? I ordered a couple 5-round mags for my Ruger American, but they are exactly the same length as my 10-rounders. I have very little need for 10 rounds and the length gets in the way too often for bench and my general use.

Pro mag makes a 5 round AR 223 mag that fits flush with the bottom of the magwell.

You may have to try a few to find one that will drop free with the mag release button. Some of the ones I've had are a press fit and need a tool to remove.
The last four that I bought do all drop free.

I use one of these, it sticks out 3/4" below the lip of the rear of the magazine well. Would that be short enough for you?

Ideally, I would like it to be about 2" from the top of the feed-lips to the base. 10-round versions run nearly 3 3/4". Maybe I'm looking for what doesn't exist, but you can see from the picture in post #5 just how much is hanging out into thin air!

Thanks. I see a 5-round 'flush mount' on their site. Need to give them a call and find out just what it flush mounts into. I'm guessing an AR. Not a lot of magazine well on the Ruger.

Sorry, I have owned a Ruger No. 1 and Model 77 other than that I'm not familiar with Ruger models and when you said Ruger American and AR magazines I thought it was one of their AR-15 type rifles. Then I completely missed the image you posted of the bolt gun.

It appears the ProMag flush mount magazine would be about 3" long from feed lips to bottom. That is longer than you want, but would be a bit shorter than my other suggestion. Again sorry for the misunderstanding on my part.

No problem. Thanks for trying.

If I was wanting a flush 5 round mag for the Ruger American, I would be tempted to buy a ProMag 5 round metal and cut it down. Doesn't seem to be that bad of a job.

A thought. Doesn't have to be flush, but it needs to be a lot shorter. I can live with it (and have since I bought it) but less hanging out of the bottom of the rifle would sure be nice.

Yep, whack off the bottom with a hacksaw, a couple tiny screws or pins through a plastic, wood, or aluminum plate shaped to fit the bottom, snip off the spring, assemble and you will be in business. More or less! might take two tries!!
