5 keys to 600 yard Benchrest

I use 3 shot groups as well until I find something that shows promise.

Your gettin in the mode now, keep at it and it will keep getting better. Get around those big piney shooters and they will throw gas on your fire!

Advice: lay out or separate the 5 for score so you don't have to count during a string.

I don't shoot IBS we do use their target when we shoot 600 yds . I do hold the club record for small and possibly second small It is 1.065 I tune and pratice the same way for all my guns . I use a tuner. and choose my tune up or down from the point of aim at 100
That is the same tune. My son shot at 300 yds It was 4 targets with 5 shots each All were under 1" without wind flags
My first stapement you need a gun that shoots .250 at 100 to win. I still feel that way . Sorry if I answered wrong . Larry

I've came to the conclusion from interpreting Larry's posts, when it comes to LR-Benchrest, thinking nationally there is the IBS, NBRSA, Penn1000, and Larry's own local club venues. !.!.!

Even though there are literally 100's of other clubs spread across the USA, I'm thinking Larry's local club and records supersede all other clubs and sanctioned bodies.... or at least that is the insinuation I get.

You guys are brutal!! I watched walker shoot at the Nationals last year, why is it no one mentioned being able to throw 5 shots down range in less than 10 seconds or so? Seems to me this might make the top 5 list? I've watched some of the top shooters and they all have the ability to shoot very quickly when they need to.

I have seen 10 shots in 13 seconds many times. Many guys average 10 shots in 20 seconds. Matt

That's a quick way to lose at a first match also. That took those guys years of refining equipment and hand coordination to get there. Careful shots will give you the best chance right now.

Right, I understand that. I can't stop thinking that It might be better to try and shoot a condition rather then pick my way through and wait out what I think is the right condition. 600 yards leaves a good chance of screwing things up.

True it is, but it takes time to get good enough at it to make it pay off. You will speed up naturally as you go forward with repetition and refining of gear. That's why IBS recognizes rookie for 2 years. Do what you can do smoothly

To be successful at Bench rest you don't have to shoot small groups, you just can't shoot any big ones......

There is a lot of good info in this post, but as usual there is a lot of garbage also. I dont have a top 5 but i would say find a load at what ever yardage you have available, 100, 300, 500 whatever. You have to start somewhere. Go to an ibs match, and watch the good guys, the ones who win everywhere, not just a match of five in florida. Ask questions, i came into the sport knowing nothing and some of the very guys in this post became my friends and led me to many successful matches all across the country. Get a load, go to match, pay attention, make sure to do smooth work on the bench, speed will come.

I don't shoot benchrest but F-Class isn't far off. Here would be my top 5.

1. A VERY understanding wife.
2. A chunk of disposable income.
3. A good attitude.
4. A good friend, which you'll make many, to sell your crap when you die for what it's worth, not what you told your VERY understanding wife what you paid for it.

You dont shoot ibs, therefore you dont know what it takes to win. End of story. Show up at any match against guys like tom jacobs, jason walker, sam hall, tom mousel, or mike wilson and you will learn real quick. To the original poster, shoot a lot, observe those who win, and ask questions

A very accurate rifle of appropriate chambering is a start. Then one must load match quality ammo with attention to every detail. After that it is a matter of good table manners and the ability to read what the wind is doing to your bullets on their way to the target. After all of this, add a touch of luck and you should be good to go. Good shooting...James
