5.7x28

Looking for input and information on optimum barrel length for the 5.7 by 28 cartridge. Wanting to shoot this suppressed in a AR platform but don't want to hurt the cartridge ballisticly by making the barrel too short. Any thoughts ideas or places to look for such information. Thanks jack

It was designed for a pistol or that bullpup so you probably cant get too short but its so fast its not a good subsonic candidate imo
Dusty, I agree. Just want to maximize the ballistics of the round and make the gun as short as possible. Don't want to cheat the capabilities of the round. Not looking to make it subsonic. Just short light and fast

The PS90 has 16" barrel but the P90, which is the original military designed bull pup rifle only has a 10" barrel. I bet if you did a 16" barrel AR you'd just about maximize the potential of the round. Not much powder behind that bullet and it is a fast burning powder at that.

I don't think your going to go to short with this round.. The round was designed for a "personal protection weapon" made to be concealed in a "spooks" trench coat... It was made to take the place of the Uzi you could say.

After all I have herd and learned (which isn't much just because there just doesn't seem to be much info out there) I am leaning on a 12" barrel suppressed. Thanks for all the info everyone! Keep it coming. Knowledge is power!

I have called four different barrel makers, three of the ammunition manufacturers that make this cartridge, die makers and looked into SAAMI. With very little luck. No info other than the FN 4 1/4 barrel

I built a 1-7 twist 5.7x28 singleshot and went with 16 " barrel . Two reasons 1- no tax stamp 2- I can get 77 and 80 gr bullets to 1000fps . Maybe the two are not related and I mostly did it because of the stamp but I can't help but think the extra barrel length helps with the heavier bullets .

If you plan on reloading they can be very finicky, be careful with charge weights (baby steps), and changing primers (back off charge weight). Small rifle primers work fine but ANY time you change primers BE CAREFUL, especially blowback action. My reloads were tons better than any FN 40g factory loads, those things had an ES of like 400 FPS over a box!

If its a blowback, keep an eye on how much the shoulder moves forward, its a load tuning indicator.

If its a blowback, DO NOT remove the coating on the brass, this is how the blowback delay is achieved.

Elite is supposedly ready to release their aftermarket 5.7x28 brass soon.

Great info!!! Thanks
There is a 16 inch AR upper in 5.7, That uses the p90 mags. I havent chrono'd the round thru it but keeping factory ammo in a 2 inch group at 100yds was no proble.9Used a T1 aimpoint that has a 2 minute dot so I was satisfied with the results. I have run maybe 100 rounds thru the upper and it seems solid. I believe it was rhineland arms.
I will also agree that the pistol is good out to 100 yds.

Great info. I have been looking at the AR57 upper. Didn't know that anyone else made one. I will look into it. Bought a Vortex Spitfire 3x to top it off

watch your buffer and buffer retaining pin . have a customer that brought one in and the buffer was eating itself alive. and the company will not return calls. ar57 complete rifle
