5.7X28 necked down to .17????

Haha cool, it shoot good or not really worth it?
It's a wildcat and requires a bit of work, but it's a stinger. 35xxfps with a 20gr bullet, but the rifle has to be a Cooper or highly modified cz (to be a repeater). Is it worth it? To me it is.

My wildcat, 17 Kit Fox will launch a 17gr @ 3800+ 24" tube,
before the primer pockets start becoming loose,

Note this case will NOT tolerate high pressure for long,
check the amount of material between the primer pocket and extraction groove.

It is my reloadable, 17 cal Rim Fire case.

I converted a Cooper 38, it was a 17ccm. Feeds and ejects just dandy. I even used the original 17ccm barrel for the project.

I would have used the 4.6x30 case,
if I could have got my grubby mitts on some,
I was given a 3# coffee can full of the 5.7 cases,
so I went with that case instead for the 17 Kit Fox.

The difference between the cases is only a few thousands difference at the extraction groove, .260" minus .175" leaves only .085" divided x 2 = .042" on each side.

Since the case head sits outside the chamber, any extra pressure swells the primer pocket sides, and can cause blown primer pockets,
as I well found out.

If kept within reasonable pressure limits, it make a very useful handy and re loadable RF round etc,
a 17gr VMax bullet works out to 250-300 yds on sage bunnies in the hay fields, with several yeller dogs thrown in for good measure.

Tia,
Don

The 5.7 -28 case has a MAJOR flaw . It's ok to shoot once maybe twice and throw out , but any more than that your asking for burnt bolt faces .
Cut a case in half , then cut thr rim down to the extractor groove depth , and cut in half , mic the amount of brass between the case and primer pocket .
Good luck but you'll be pulling your hair out and wondering why I went down this rabbit hole.

Precisely why I advocate using HK brass.

Yes , but I couldn't find any 6-7 maybe longer years ago . I just RECHAMBERED for the Hornet case , then a duplicate with the bee .
I sure wish it worked , I had 2 five gallon buckets of once fired brass .

Reviving an old thread.

Owning a 5.7x28 pistol and seeing the performance of the round, I am thinking of necking this down to .17 BECAUSE I can't get 17wsm ammo reasonably or reliably. Out of box accuracy sucks and I have to modify seating depth to get any kind of consistency or accuracy.

Running some ideas through quickload, this looks like a great centerfire replacement for the round. Previous tries appear to try and make it into something it can't be. It looks good with 20gr V-Max and around 3300fps while staying under 50kpsi.

It doesn't make sense to compare it to a 17 fireball any more than comparing a .260 rem to a 6.5 prc. The under 10 gr powder charges and standard small rifle primers are very attractive.

So I was just going to make a post about this. So question, how hard would it be to get someone to make a AR barrel for something like this ? Cmmg already has a kit for the regular 5.7 sooo..... Would just need a barrel in the .17 cal version... Sound alike some KAK might get into since they make the .17-5.56 already
