5.56 or .300 Blackout

My son is building a 5.56 he is big into guns. And we decided to build one together.
He's going all out on his and I'm torn between the 5.56 or the .300 Blackout? Friends help me out. I'm all new to this gun.

Oh snap! Maybe you're right. :)

Seriously, you can use a suppressor with or w/o subsonic rounds. It will still reduce the sound significantly. I was hunting in TX and one of the guys there was shooting with a can and boy it was quite. One thing I've read is that 556 you can't shoot subsonic rounds and make them cycle. 300blk you can shoot subs and supers and both will cycle AND you have a huge selection of bullets to choose from. At least for supers...

To make a 300 subsonic 200 plus GR bullet is needed to keep it subsonic . If you shoot a hog the bullet never expands . Breaking bone is a must or you need to have a dog to recover it.
556 is the only way to go . Larry

General purpose, 5.56
Long range work, 6.5 Grendel
Subsonic or hog hunting, 300 blk
Deer hunting, 6x45

But seriously, both of you have to watch this video. It will give you the answer you're looking for.

And why would you NOT shoot a hog with a supersonic round in 300blk? Am I missing something?
I've heard of people "hunting" (controlling) feral pigs at night with a night-vision scope and a suppressed AR in 300 AAC Blackout. You use subsonic ammo so that the whole operation is silent. They never knew what hit them or the pig standing next to them. 300 Blackout was developed as a subsonic round for use in suppressed M4 carbines. To me, without a specific need, it's just one more caliber to keep track of. I have to keep track of 14 calibers already. That's enough.

When used with super sonic rounds the 300 AAC does a pretty decent job of duplicating the performance of the 7.62x39 in a cartridge that works in an AR platform without special mags.

It is designed to work in an AR platform with subsonic rounds and a can. Shooting subsonics is usually a heavy (175-200gr) bullet at about 1000FPS. Shooting it subsonic I'd think 100 yards max range for effective penetration on anything much bigger than a squirrel and not much/any expansion.

If that is something you might be interested in then go for it.

I think it is safe to say that the 300 will never ever have the plentiful (at least this week) ammo that is available for the 556, its always going to be a bit of an oddball chambering in the AR platform, just like anything other than 556 is.

That said I do have one, just because I wanted it, and I have about 5000 once fired military cases that someone (not me) oversized by a lot that are perfect to cut down and size into 300 cases.

I built a 300 because I have more than two 556s, I wanted something different. I wouldn't build one for my only AR or probably not for my second AR. Then again with an AR you can always grab an upper and see how you like it.

One thing the video does not mention is how well or poorly the case actually fits in the action and magazine. The AR was designed for a .223-sized case. I've known people who shot 6mm PPC in an AR for NMC and had to cut out the fronts of the mags so that the rounds would feed. IMHO, unless you are building a "Space Gun" for competition, using a fatter case than the .223 is just an exercise in the esoteric. In which case, you should be building a different rifle. In 90% of the situations discussed in the video, you actually want either a .223 or a .308. In general, the best policy is K.I.S.S. Unless you just want something to show off to your friends, in which case, do whatever makes your ducky quack.

I shot a 223 Bushmaster for about 10 years total with about 3 years use in 3 gun comps. Great cartridge and platform.

In 2008 moved to the piston platform and the 6.8 SPC. This was a headache to begin with because there was only one magazine that really worked 100% and it was longer than I liked. The magazine problem is better now but still not that many quality options - Barrett, CPD and PRI are the only ones that work 100% and two of the three are pricy but they are quality. The 6.8 for me was real easy to load for and I have used nothing but 110 vmax's and H322 powder. The 6.8 has kind of a cult following in Texas with hog hunters. Other than a few coyotes I have no opinion on it as a hunting round. Deer does not seem out of the question though.

Around 2013 started accumulating components for a SBR 300 BLK build which I finished earlier this year. Very limited time behind the gun - 1000 rounds but so far I like it but that is because it is such a small lightweight package. To me and ME ONLY the 300 BLK is just a pistol cartridge that shoots rifles bullets. Yes I can lob some in to long range targets but its still just a pistol cartridge. I think as a hunting round it is limited to range because of its lower velocity. I don't see to many hogs killed past 200 yards with it. As a self defense round I think it is much better.

My recommendation would be 223, hands down.

Id recommend a grendel.

I hate the 556/223 round. I got rid of an AR i had in it. 22-250 works better than a 223 for me.

6.5 grendel does it all.

300blk, i just built one, its fun as heck with a can on it! No it isnt long range, but inside 100 yards ita kill. The 208-220 gr bullet still hits hard at slower velocities... i wouldnt want to get shot by one.. it still has "power" behind it..

This guy knows. 6.5g really is the do all caliber for an ar-15 platform.

One on the left is my 6.5g The one on the right was a DMR 5.56 which has been since sold. I still have my high power 5.56 rifle but I enjoy shooting the grendel for everything else
