5.45x39 any one?

I just learned this cartridge exists about 2hrs ago.
And im an old man..good lord.
Is any one doing anything with the 5.45x39 cartridge or wildcats base off it.
Looks like its between the 221 fireball, and the 223rem.
ive never even heard any one talk about this case. Is it long gone..no brass , or no good
What can you tell me
Thank you

First it takes a .221 bullet instead of a .224. The 5.45x39 is on the same case as the 7.62x39. there are any number of wildcats and factory rounds based on that case from the 22 PPC to the 6.5 Grendel. I have a factory round that is loaded on a batch of brass intended for the 7.62x39. Headsptamped 711(might be cyrillic letters) over 61, semi-pointed soft point

The 5.45x39 has a smaller rim diameter than 7.62x39 and bigger than 5.56. Hornady supposedly makes brass for it, but have never seen any

That round was used for AK74 series. It has not been imported for sometime but as stated above Hornady does make it. Don’t know about any wildcats.

I use to purchase these in the spam cans before restrictions were put in place.

Ok..i did some searching and it appears no one sells brass for it, and the odd bullet size.
But ....but..7.62x39 is ready available..lapua makes some also
Seems to me 7.62x39 neck down for a .224 dia bullet could be something special..could be more redundancy..if haven't looked up case capacity
I wont even waist my time if its comparable to the 22ppc.
I like the ppc and br to much to ever cheat on those two sexy momma's.hahaha..

No, not really. The two cases have little in common other than they are both Comm Bloc Ammo.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.45×39mm

The 7N6 ammo became popular in the US when cheap surplus came into Europe and American after the USSR broke up and when some semi-auto versions of the AK 74 were produced. Then later, other labels started showing up as well. Ones like Wolf, Barnaul, and Tula come to mind.

For a time, you could shoot surplus 7N6 for less than $0.10/rnd delivered to your door in original crates with two SPAM cans full per crate. That made it the equivalent of centerfire ammo for rimfire prices.

My daughters and many other kids went through crates of the stuff when it was cheap.

All the clones of AK-74 used the stuff and it was only natural that folks would start using it in AR rigs.

A few outfits made ARs that ran original Russian AK-74 magazines, and a few outfits made specific 5.45x39 AR magazines. At one point, S&W offered an M&P AR in 5.45x39 until around 2012.

As far as Boxer Prime brass, it was available before the embargo made the 5.45x39 less popular. I have a good supply of the Hornady 60 gr VMax bullets, their dies, and Boxer brass as well.

In a Service Rifle clone I had built, the surplus ammo will hold well inside a 10 ring at 300 yards, and roughly capable of about 15X out of 20. The handloads will clean it. In general, the 7N6 ammo is better than 75mm at 300 meters, which is second only to Swiss GP11 as far as I am concerned.

@bobcat93 , the only problem with these wars and the embargos is that you missed the heyday of this stuff. The AK-74 surplus ammo is above average stuff in the examples I have tested, and the Hornady 60 VMax ammo was excellent.

That said, the 5.45x39 has no relation to those other wildcats or the 220 Russian based PPC versions. In original form, it was steel cased. The brass versions came along later, and some folks did wildcats, but those wildcats are very rare and not the ones being discussed here.

Unless the ammo starts being produced in factories outside of the embargo boundaries and someone imports it, then I wouldn't worry about it.

One of the ROs at the FWC range in West Palm Beach and several friends have been dealing with this for several years and have made something that shoots. But I don't think it is optimal. Biden stopped Russian ammo imports and this killed it, with the war in the Ukraine i don't see it coming back soon. All Ive ever seen is steel cased Russian junk. It's not even close to the same league with 22PPC.

Man..why is it every time i find something cool in this stink-n world that im interest in its ether discontinued, or expensive and rare..
Even if i start to like a brand of potato chips..nope!, it gets discontinued or out of business pulled from the shelf..
It just always seems like that..and it stinks!.
I feel like Charlie Brown , how lucy always pulls the ball out of the way and he falls for it every time.

Oh what i read the 5.45x39 has a smaller rim then the 7.62x39..
Also 5.45x39 brass is an issue, bullet diameter is an issue.
So have any one taken the 7.62x39 case, squashed that neck to 22cal. And barreled it for .224 diameter bullets.
All problems solved.
Then we are back on the tail of the 22ppc .
So is that where the story ends?.
Because its close to the ppc whats the point..it probably won't out perform the 22ppc.
Is that the general census

No, the story doesn't end, it doesn't start. There is more difference than just the rim diameter. We need to make this more clear.

A European 5.6x39 has a 7.62x39 as a parent, but that isn't related to 5.45x39.
5.6x39 = 220 Russian
5.45x39 does not.

There is no relationship between 5.45x39 and 220 Russian, thus zero chance of using a 5.45x39 to end up with a PPC.

Nobody serious running PPC starts with 7.62x39 brass. If you want to try a PPC, you can just start with PPC brass. YMMV

A straight 220 Russian boltgun would be interesting shooting .224 68-77's. Anyone ever done it?
Feed out of an AK mag?

S&b they will be importing boxer/ brass ammo later this year for 5.45,,,,at about.80¢ per

There are about 4 companies that stamp boxer brass, but you have to search for it.

Ive done a little looking around. There are a few bolt action rifles for sale right now in 5.45x39 nice looking bolt guns.
But! I suppose there are better alternatives. With less headache
i think 220 russian is the same thing, or an improvement on the 5.45x39 more evolution of the standardization process. That was a quick conclusion after looking at them both.both russian cartridges..duuuuuh! The light slowly went on in my head.
Any one shooting a plain jane 220 russian custom.
No neck turning just load and shoot?.
Any ammo or gun pics ? Would get us all excited.
I could definitely use a compact mag feed bolt gun in 220 russian in the woods Blasting stuff.
Sounds fun.
Is the 220 russian a 7.62x39 case sized to 22cal.
and the 5.45x39 is a odd size bullet with a smaller case head- bolt face size.
So the 220 russian fixed the problem.
If the 220 russian and the 7.62x39 is the same case it simplified prodution compatability thats something old Henry Ford would have came up with.
But im only speculating..please correct me if im wrong.
You know how we have the
32-20, 25-20, 218 bee ect.
Is the 7.62x39, 220 russian, 22 ppc.
Yes obviously in 2025 we have the absolute luxury of ppc cartridge support ( its a record breaker with a standing proven track record )
Absolute no questions about that. In my book.
But in the beginning those two old dudes couldnt buy PPC brass..what did they make it out of..220 russian.

Most likely due to it not doing well or selling with a majority of shooters.

Chronologically out of order.
First came the 7.63x39 (1943).
Then came the 220 Russian, from the 7.63x39, necked down.
PPC’s came after that, usually forming from 220 Russian.
5.45x39 was an unrelated 70’s Russian military development for the AK74, replacement for the AK47 that uses 7.62x39.
The 5.45x39 is very much an odd ball, with unique case head and diameter. Really makes no sense in the free world, as it is simply a Russian version of the 223 Rem.
As hinted to above, the “new” 22 ARC is essentially a standardized and modernized 22 PPC, which uses the 7.62x39 bolt head size (same as Grendel), which is now quite common in American rifles.
5.45x39 lives in its own communist world.
