4895 question

The Hodgdon burn rate chart shows H4895 as a touch faster than IMR 4895. Load data on the Hodgdon web site seems to verify this:

.22-250, 50 gr Sierra, 36.5 gr H4895, 37.6 gr IMR 4895

.308, 155 gr Sierra Palma, 46.0 gr H4895, 47.5 gr IMR 4895

I have used them interchangeably, I have not noticed any change in bullet p.o.i. or accuracy. I think, but it is unconfirmed)that the differences shown in the load data is due to using a different test barrel.
One thing I thought was interesting when I found it out, Hodgdon actually owns IMR as well as a few other powder companies,I believe Winchester is one of them). Theoretically its possible that hodgdon and imr 4895 is the exact same powder.

The H4895 may be one of the Hogdgon Extreme powders, making it less sensitive to temp. swings, otherwise the burn rates are very similar.

No.

H4895 is made by Mulwex in Australia, think it's known as 2206H there. This company is not owned by Hodgdon.

IMR4895 is made in Canada by IMR Canada. This company is also not owned by Hodgdon.

Winchester powders are made by a division of General Dynamics in St. Marks, FL.

Hodgdon is a DISTRIBUTOR of powder. They are the US distributors for these products.

Asa_Yam; You may be correct about where the powders are manufactured, and I know that Hodgdon is a powder distributor. But as to the claim that Hodgdon does not own IMR I must disagree. As per Hodgdon's website:

To better serve our reloading customers Hodgdon Powder Company continues to grow. Hodgdon purchased IMR® Powder Company in October 2003. IMR legendary powders have been the mainstay of numerous handloaders for almost 100 years. IMR powders continue to be manufactured in the same plant and with the same exacting performance criteria and quality assurance standards that shooters have come to expect.

In March 2006, Hodgdon Powder Company and Winchester® Ammunition announced that Winchester® branded reloading powders would be licensed to Hodgdon. Winchester smokeless propellants, the choice of loading professionals, are available to the handloader to duplicate the factory performance of loads from handgun to rifle and shotgun.

Hodgdon does not own Winchester powders, but they are the distributor for them.

Actually Hodgdon owns Hodgdon, IMR and Winchester Powder. They bought the Winchester Powder division 3 years ago or something like that. They are a distributor for Vihtavuori.
According to Hodgdon it is not recommended to use the IMR and Hodgdon 4895 data interchangeably.
