4895 in .222 Rem.

My reloading manual shows 24.6 as the max. load in the .222 with a 53 grain Bullet. New Sierra manual. This load fills the case up to the top of the neck With a few grains dropping off. I'm talking 4895 powder. That would be a pretty compressed load with a 53 grain HP Match King. Is this normal. I would never start out with a load like this but would use if I could work up to it safely. 4895 is listed as a good powder for the .222 so I would like some input on this combo. Thanks a lot.

In my rifle it was safe and I shot it for two seasons and won UBR SSOY with it. But, I trickled it sloooooowly and it was still compressed. I moved to RL 7 and had more room in the case with the same accuracy.

H4895 or IMR4895?

It was IMR that I was using but I also have the H4895. How much difference is there?

Granule size, which would affect filling and packing density for a load like this.

Hodgdon website says 2.140" COL and 23.5gr (compressed) max charge for either.

In neck sized Lapua brass, 23 grains of H4895 reaches the bottom of the neck leaving plenty of room for that bullet. That was the sweet spot for accuracy in the 222 my son shoots (Savage).

Thanks a lot for all the feedback. A good load with 4895 pretty much fills the case whether it's IMR or H. I believe I read somewhere that the less space left in the loaded case, the more accurate the load is. Which would make 4895 top of the line. Thanks again.

19.5 grains of H4198 is slightly more accurate with the 53 SMK in the 222 Rem my son shoots. We've also been doing well lately with faster powers in other calibers with more like 90% load density.

I have never understood why people want to make a 222 shoot like a 223. If you are after that kind of performance, shoot a 223. The 222 is a SWEET cartridge and held many BR records for years - shoot it like it was designed to shoot.

Just my opinion.

Love my 222 and shoot 50 gr as the heavies bullet preferring to shoot 40 grain bullets. I agree with 19.5 of 4198 with a 50 grain BlitzKing.

What Rick said and I have never had one of my many .222's that didn't shoot the RL7 better.

Travelor Re: 4895 in .222 Rem.

What powders did you use when shooting 40 gr bullets? Rel 7 better than 4895? I usually use Rel 7. Just got a bunch of 40 gr bullets for my 222.

I don't have my .222 chambered yet, but i was going to look at LT 30 for the 35-40 grain bullets

I use 4198 with my own 46 gr bullet. Clocked velocities 3300 FPS + out of a 24" barrel. My other two 222 rifles like it also. I've tried other powders over the last 30 years and have always come back to 4198. This is the powder that was used in the development of this wonderful cartridge.

You do realize that the "hotrod" load of 23.5 H4895 is actually 4kpsi lower psi than the "mild" load of H4198, don't you??? ??? ??? ???

I've had a deuce since Remington brought out this cartridge and never ran into a pressure problem with 4198 loads and 50 to 52 gr bullets. Mike Walker, the father of the triple deuce could have used 4895 but in his opinion 4198 was a better choice. So I guess I'll continue to dance with the person that brought me.

I had 2, 222's a 722 Rem and a Tikka 55. Both liked BLC2 with 50-55 grain bullets. IIRC 24.5 grs worked well, as always start lower. Barlow

I was thinking the same thing, I used to "Hot Rod" mine with 4198 but achieve better accuracy and lower pressure with 4895. Lost some fps but gained some accuracy. Each rifle is different so why not use the powder that works best in yours? Take the advice of others but let results of your rifle determine. I still use 4198 in a varmint load with 40 v max, noting beat the speed or accuracy in my rifle. Many great powders to choose from.
