.45acp primers

I’m a new reloader. I want to reload .45acp, but I only have small pistol primers. I have heard that you can get .45acp cases for small pistol primers…is it safe? …is it recommended?

Is it safe - yes

Is it recommended - If all you have are small pistol primers, sure

I load my 45 ACP with both large and small pistol primers and have never had an issue with the small primer loads.

Many people dislike the small primer brass because they are the exception and they can mess up progressive loading if set up for large primers (hard to squeeze a large primer into a small primer pocket)

Just for clarification, you know that 45 ACP brass can come in both large and small primers pockets, right?
You threw me when you asked if it was safe or not, these wouldn't be produced and let out to the public if they were not engineered to be safe

Yes! It’s safe and some like it better than the large.
I may have some small primer brass, if you can’t find any. It gets mixed up with my Large Primer brass and causes all kinds of problems.

Add: I just spent 10 minutes sorting a bag of brass. I found about 100 small primer brass so far and still have 1/2 of the bag to go. Want them? They have been tumbled, resized and belled. Basically ready to reload.

Very safe, the ,45ACP has a small boiler room and doesn't need a large primer to ignite the relatively small powder charge. The round was derived from the 30-03 case, hence the large primer. There is only a very miniscule deviation in performance using the small primer case as opposed to the large.

I shoot both large & small primer 45 ACP.
Since i also load for 9mm, i don't use the small primer as much in 45.

I mostly shoot range pick up brass.

I, too, load both sizes and shoot the SP brass at lost brass matches.

In the chrono tests that I have done, there is a very slight velocity loss, about 20fps.

Most revolver shooters I know prefer the SP brass.

Load them and be happy.

Joshb, What do you want for the brass?

Busy today testing a few guns with friends , let me look tomorrow after I sharpen some mower blades for a neighbor... Not sure what's back there I used to have a bunch but I may have given them away already...

EDIT... Sorry I just dug out everything and didn't find any.... I had a box full but I gave them to a reloader at my gun range already.... If I find any more I will notify you... Once again sorry , when you have stuff everywhere you lose track....

I have a bag of them too. Not sure how many are in the bag. They’ve all been tumbled. Most are deprimed. If you want them PM me your address as well. I’m not as nice as joshb though - I’ll cover the shipping but you have to throw $20 to the site for a silver upgrade.

Sorry guys I could have sworn I had probably a few thousand SP .45 brass but I gave a friend a box of thousands of .45 brass when I sold my last .45 and went to all 9mm.... I looked again and all I found was LP brass I still have for some reason.... I will probably see that guy this week and will ask him if he can look if he still has them.... I work at a gun range so brass isn't really a big deal.... What is a big deal is the fact it's gotten slow becouse of the ammo shortage or I could normally pick up a bunch in a few weeks....

Now it's got me looking to see exactly what all I have in buckets.... At least I am finding some nice new bags of rifle brass I had forgotten about.... I started shooting skeet when covid started and haven't been loading alot exept for shotgun.... Now there's bags of shot and wads everywhere also...lol
