454 Casull for elk?

If you are proficient with your revolver, that's a chip shot with a scope. There's a ton of bozos out there banging away at 3 or 4 hundred yards with their rifles that can't seem to hit the 300 yd gong at the range with a rest. jd

SWIFT Makes (or did make) bonded bullets in the 250-300gr range. I shot those for a short bit and they were very accurate and a tough bullet with a good meplat. If they open, fine and if not same basic benifit as a cast WFN or LFN.

I’d use a heavy super hard cast bullet anytime over a 240 gr JHP if that’s what you have in mind. You want to put an elk down fast so you’re not hauling it any further than necessary. I’d buy or try to duplicate something like these:

At 454 pressures, I'd be concerned with bullet deformation. There is a reason that make thicker magnum jackets for the 454 and 460 magnums. They come in non HP flavors.

Another option is this,

This Jack Hammer™ is designed for the 45 Colt or the 45 ACP. This will be a great self defense or hunting bullet when deep straight line penetration is needed.

If it were me, I'd use a 300gr hard cast with a big flat nose. They seem to work pretty well on big game.

I'd use any durable 250ish grain bullet that I could reliably hit the 16" gong with at 100 yds. jd

Speer 300g JSP, and Hornady 300g XTP work well on deer through my inline muzzle loader, should work in a 454 Casull on elk. I have also killed a hog with the 300g Speer in my 45 Colt Bisley.
