45 Extra Long

I have been told that 45acp cases can bve made by cutting down 30-06 or 308 win. cases. If this is so it would seem reasonable to believe that those same cases could be expanded out to make a extra long version and headspace being set the same way.Is this correct?I just thought it make an interesting alternative to the belted magnum case or trying to get a bolt gun converted to handle a rimmed version such as the 45-70 in the siamese mauser as was done by Navy Arms a few decades back.Especially for those of us left haded shooters who would like to use a bolt gun but don't want to go the belted route;such as a 458.

The 45 ACP brass does have an extractor groove especially for the 1911 pistol so any brass made from 06 would have to have modifications made to the rim if you intend to use it in the pistol. The 308, on the other hand, has a wider groove and would probably work just fine.

There is also the Winch 45 Magnum brass which is longer than the ACP.

However, it seems you are interested in building a rifle around a straight case, not a handgun. You can buy 06 cylindrical brass and save yourself a lot of work. Huntington's used to stock it but I'm not sure of the status re: their sales of empty brass. They could probably help in directing you to a source if they no longer have it.

There is no reason that a rifle cartridge headspacing on the case mouth should not work but that's why God makes belted cases.;)

Good luck with your project.

The idea is to build a left hand bolt action rifle using readily avaiable brass that approximates the 45-70.I know the alternative is to get a left handed action set up for the 7mm rem mag.and re-barrel it for 458win mag. or one of the shorter Barnes vesions, which is the direction that I might take.As in the long run it might be cheaper. But I am just kicking around an old idea of mine.

Three options come to mind:

1) The .450 Marlin, essentially a belted .45-70 case. The belt is quite different from those found on .300 Win mag, .458 Win mag etc. Good cartridge, takes any of the popular .458 bullets that .45-70 shooters, like me) use.

2) The .458 SOCOM, by Cor-Bon and Rock River Arms. Slick. Don't know much about it, but they're talking a 300 gr bullet at 1900 fps, which is nothing to sneeze at.

3) Hornady's new .450 Bushmaster. http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=543
