45 ACP

I don't know if your question is out of curiosity, or you think there is a benefit of one over the other, flash hole size that is.

If you are buying or collecting brass to reload, stick with the traditional LP primer. I hate finding a SP primer when loading with a progressive press.

Wasn’t so much a benefit. Don’t have dies yet so I was wondering about the decapping pin diameter. I’ve collected some brass already and they are mixed primer size.

I don't have pin gages that small but with drill bits I am getting around .076 on the small primer and .085 on the large primer.

The decaping pin on my Dillon 45ACP die just slides through the small primer hole so it must be just under .076.

I bent the decap pin on my 650 loading fired brass. One of them had a small primer pocket and I found it. Didnt sort it. Im not rich but I can afford new brass. Sold the rest of it for scrap. Doug

I don't know if it is still this way but the idea behind SPP in 45 acp was because they only made non toxic primers for indoor shooting in SPP. Most should have NT engraved in the headstamp.

Smaller pin will decap brass with a large flashhole. Not so much the other way.

AFAIK, a standard pin (meaning what comes with most consumer dies) will work on anything except the Lapua small flash holes (which are really small, like sub .060".)

Just be sure and sort out the S/P and L/P from each other so you don't get loud problems installing primers... Other than that testing has shown no difference.... 10mm was made with large primers but the use of small primer was actually preferred to decrease the chance of interference with the ejector in some pistols.... There's not much rim with the large pistol primers in that case compared to the small.... Plus I never personally have found any difference in small or large primers in either .45acp or the 10mm.... Load and shoot them... It's good to have both brass in case of times like these.... I can't find large pistol primers but I can find small....

No difference. Flash holes are all fine for decapping. I save and sort them off. Some guys hate this, but I can run the primer size I Have the most.

Anyone remember those MASSIVE flash holes on the "Win Clean" 45 acp brass??

The NT 45 ACP does use small primers. That said, the most common small primer 45 brass is Federal and Blazer headstamp. I have also seen small primer Hornady, as well as CCI and Speer if I recall correctly.

Norma makes a 9mm with a smaller than normal size flash hole. My 9mm sizer pin will not go thru it. Have to set them aside and drill out the hole before sizing.

I've loaded a good bit of .45acp. Brass is abundant. Life is much easier if you stick with large primers. Trying to load both is double the work and double the chance for a headache.

For those that don't like SP brass, just find a revolver shooter and trade or sell the brass. It is claimed to give better ignition in revolvers.

I run a Dillon 1050 and if I have loaded 9mm, I don't need to change the primer feeder. I load LP and SP brass and it makes no difference to me unless I am low on SP primers.
