45 ACP

I was at a friends house yesterday and he had a box of 45s laying on a cabinet in the dining room. I was curious and picked it up for a look, it was old but not so nasty looking I would be afraid to shot it. He saw me looking and told me someone had given it to him that wanted it disposed of. He said he didn't have a 45 but he would shoot it if he did, it didn't look so bad that he was afraid of it either. He knew I have 45s and gave it to me as I was leaving. Last night I looked up the head stamp and it was made at the Frankfort Arsenal in 1932. The one on the end that I looked over most did in fact have issues, IT had had neck tension for so many years that the case had a tiny crack form the bullet. I will examine the rest and my friend and I will shot them if they aren't cracked.

Just for fun, try a magnet on the cases. They may have been made from steel, which would maybe be one reason that case cracked. Any in good shape can still be shot since 45 ACP is pretty low pressure, but clean your pistols thoroughly when done. Many used corrosive primers.

If the box is full and in decent condition these may be of interest to a cartridge collector or collector of US military items.

The cardboard box is so dry it is brittle and one cartridge is missing. Corrosive primers is my biggest concern. Steel cases, no Ive reloaded thousands of rounds these are brass and having neck tension split a neck is common with ammo this age. I am not sure I don't have more confidence in these cartridges than I do Russian and Chinese steel cased crap that get shot at the range buy the bucket.

I would try to sell it to a collector.

I shoot thousands of corrosive rounds a year. It is not a problem. There is this new product just developed to deal with black powder and corrosive primers. WATER. Yes you heard it here first. Water the very same product that comes out of your own faucet.

Just clean and oil your stuff and you will be fine.
