45 ACP twice fired case split

While at the range today I was shooting some reloads that I did about a year ago and while picking the cases off the ground I noticed this one was almost split in half. These particular cases came from my friend who was also shooting his 45 and I know that they were new factory loads so this is only the 2nd time they have been fired. I load light so I knew it wasn't that. The load I was using RMR 230gr RN on top of 8.4gr Blue Dot @ 1/265" oal. The gun I was using was an XDM 45.

Any ideas to what may have caused this or maybe it was just a defective case.

The head stamp says TZZ 87

I would check on the 1911 forums to see if they have any ideas. Could it have been a double charge? What brand is the brass?

I doubt it was a double charge since I use a Hornady LNL press with the case activated drop and I do look at each drop made. I probably would have felt it in the recoil too when fired.

Tzz cases for that matter all case occasionally split . No big deal unless EVERY case every time splits .

I can tell you it's not a double charge. A double charge blows the brass out of the unsupported portion of the case and sends it out in a fan between the slide and the frame and into your face, the mag gets blown out of the bottom of the pistol, the slide splits along the the race below where the extractor is drilled through and you have to hammer the slide off... well at least one scenario with a 1911. ::) ::)

Thanks! I just want to make sure it is not Armscor. My guess is perhaps just a bad batch of brass that perhaps was not annealed properly – it happens.

It's israeli military brass , most likely made under Saami for shoot and throw away .
Some TZZ 45 was really prone to splitting .

On a related note, I purchased a lot of .45 ACP brass from brassmanbrass.com in Oregon recently. No problems what so ever. Not as cheap as picking up brass at the range, but will last me for a good long while (maybe a lifetime with a brass catcher).

Probably the best thing for me to do is toss them since I have a few thousand pieces of 45 brass that are a lot newer . ;D
