45 ACP help needed

A couple of days ago I was at my LGS looking for some projectiles for my 45 ACP. I picked up a box without scrutinizing the label as I should have. I purchased Hornady XTP #45200. I normally shoot the 230 gr and this one happens to be 250. My question is, is this specific projectile made for the ACP or is it made typically for another cartridge? I don't mind shooting heavy for caliber bullets, but since I'm not fining any loading data for it in the ACP I though I'd ask. Anyone have experience with this specific bullet in their ACP? Thanks, Durward

I think that is designed for the .45 LC cartridge (revolver, perhaps some lever action rifles). The 230 has always been the top end for the .45ACP. There is a diameter difference as well (.452 vs .451). I personally would not use it in a .45ACP cartridge, but I'm sure others will chime in.

If you will look I think you will find a crimping grove on that bullet, thinking it's for the big 45 cal revolvers...... John

Don't know about that specific bullet, but have shot lots of 255 lead in bygone USPSA days..... Always fun when the light is just right and you can see that monster headed downrange...... Still have several boxes of them.

The .452 in a jacketed bullet might tell me it's for a 45 LC. As far as the weight goes, plenty OK in a 45 ACP.

This is the 0.452" diameter based on their web page and manuals.
Hornady offers the XTP in 0.451, 0.452 diameters.

There can be blurred lines between all the 45 caliber pistol/rifle ammo, but the intent was for the 45 ACP to use the 0.451 version, and the 45 rifles and Colt revolvers to use the 250 gr 0.452" versions.

Only testing will tell you what does or doesn't work in a given chamber/barrel. Roughly around pp 946 in their latest manual shows their intended use data.

Always thought 45 LC bullets were .454 and 45 ACP bullets were .452.
Yes, sort of.
Lots of blurred lines with 45 caliber being used in so many different designs and eras.
I'm sure one can find examples of all sorts, I have seen many in my own rigs.

These are jacketed SD bullets and I am only pointing out what the Hornady books noted about their bullets. YMMV

250 gr and .452 dia are 45 Colt bullets, .451 230 gr are 45 ACP bullets ...you can use them, they will fit your 45 ACP chamber. I have load data for 250 gr in 45 ACP...all the way up to 260 gr jacketed bullets. For 250 gr XTP there is data for Blue Dot, Bullseye, Herco, Unique, and Clay's.
45 ACP blue dot, hero and unique are fastest in that order for muzzle velocity. Got those powders?
Around 900 down to 800 fps....some much lower if recoil bothers you...but they must get out of the barrel and cycle the gun...

The .452" (and maybe a thou or two larger) for 45 ACP was for lead bullets. Jacketed was always .451".

That said, jacketed .452" should work fine; just don't start at a max load.
