45 ACP Case Ejection Dings

I am newish to reloading. I was given equipment, have purchased many supporting tools, gauges, dies, etc., read some reloading guides and watched videos. However, I am in need of some specific guidance on cases from a recent range trip. I used a friend's 45 to shoot some 45 ACPs I reloaded. The shooting went fairly well, but when I picked up the cases they all have ejection marks. Some are deeper than others. I am trying to establish go/no go criteria for future. Can you suggest which forum would be best place to start. I have pics to upload if possible.

This ^. Looks like his extractor tension needs a bit of tuning. Appears to be forcing the case to one side a tad too early.

Yep, hitting the rear edge of the ejection port on the way out. There are probably brass markings there on the slide. It's pretty typical of GI type ejection ports (non- opened/flared) and can happen with opened ports.
It's no issue in reloading (to me anyway).
You can tune the ejector nose, flare the port, change springs or loads and maybe mitigate it.

Part of the timing issue has to do with the powder charge. You may be on the slow/low side.

My opinion is extractor is key. You will be amazed at the difference when you mess w/it. Use the military ones when experimenting, they are cheap. Always polish. You will be going there in the end anyway. You will be AMAZED at how much you can change ejection. When you get to where you really care you can get the cases to go in a coffee can with a consistant hold. Gary

Im assuming a 1911 ?

Could be your extractor needs to be tuned.

How far were the fired cases landing from the gun? 6 feet is usually good. Much farther and the recoil spring might be too light.
Does the gun have a GI ejector or an extended ejector?
Sometimes its not the extractor but that’s a good place to start.

Those cases should reload ok but the dents are suboptimal.

If it is factory ammo you may need a stronger recoil spring. If they are reloads.. Back them off a bit, there is no need to run them at full throttle.

I love my 1911s. But they can be frustrating to the novice. The recoil spring, hammer spring, and hammer shape, all affect the speed of the slide on the way back which can affect the ejection, so start with the extractor and if that doesn't work, seek experienced help.
