45-70

I have a friend that was raised in Louisiana and he goes back down there to hunt. He got himself a handy rifle in 45-70 to use during the primitive weapons season down there. He uses a stiff load of IMR 4198 and the Sierra 300 gr HP. I really opens up a deer. He uses the handy rifle because he could scope it. He has a reproduction Winchester High Wall in 45-70 and I have a Sharps that we shoot BP and Cast bullets. I have killed a few deer with the Lyman 405 flat nose bullet but for long range target my rifle likes the RCBS 500 gr BPS bullet best with 68 grs Cartridge or equivalent volume of Pyrodex Select with a walters 30 thousand wad and about 1/10" compression in a WW case and a Fed 215 primer. It will keep 10 shots inside 2 1/2" at 200 meters if I do my part. I did get to go to shoot with a friend on an old strip mine about 100 miles from my home a couple of times. We shot all the way out to 1000 yards. That was a blast. Fire at the target, eat lunch and then hear the bullet clang on the target. ;D

Hello all,

I have a D.P. Sharps in 45-70 and it is one of the most fun guns I own. 62 grains of 3F Goex and a 405 Cast Boolit puts the hurt on some steel. I have an 45-110 as well, I haven't messed with it a whole lot yet. Pretty cool stuff 8)!

I've been a fan for over 30 years. I'm all about the big bore rifles. I have 2 Marlins ( Cowboy and guide gun) a couple of rolling blocks and a C Sharps in 45-70. I dont use them as much as I do my C Sharps 45-120 with a 600gr paperpatched load. Puts a real hurting on any animal it hits.

I have an older h&r handi rifle with the shikari barrel on it and at 50 yds open sights it clover leafs them and at a hundred about an 1" or so.Love it. I also have a tc encore in 45/70,A marlin 1895(earlier one with beautiful custom checkering but unfortunately has micro groove rifling.I also have a trapdoor or 2 ,And even though this next one is 50/70(they are cousins,LOL) I have an extremely rare rolling block experimental carbine ,there are only 4 of these in private hands.I actually shoot it as well occasionally. It is near mint. Shoot straight and shoot often and be safe above all.
