I have a friend that was raised in Louisiana and he goes back down there to hunt. He got himself a handy rifle in 45-70 to use during the primitive weapons season down there. He uses a stiff load of IMR 4198 and the Sierra 300 gr HP. I really opens up a deer. He uses the handy rifle because he could scope it. He has a reproduction Winchester High Wall in 45-70 and I have a Sharps that we shoot BP and Cast bullets. I have killed a few deer with the Lyman 405 flat nose bullet but for long range target my rifle likes the RCBS 500 gr BPS bullet best with 68 grs Cartridge or equivalent volume of Pyrodex Select with a walters 30 thousand wad and about 1/10" compression in a WW case and a Fed 215 primer. It will keep 10 shots inside 2 1/2" at 200 meters if I do my part. I did get to go to shoot with a friend on an old strip mine about 100 miles from my home a couple of times. We shot all the way out to 1000 yards. That was a blast. Fire at the target, eat lunch and then hear the bullet clang on the target. ;D
