Looking for a friend with 45/70 modern rifle is looking for info using Varget with 300gr. bullet. anyone have some reload info they are using with Varget / min. to max load. Manuals I have do not list Varget, thanks.

ADI (who makes Varget) don't list that powder for the 300. They suggest AR 2207 (H4198) : http://www.adi-limited.com/handloaders/rifle.asp

He's headed into a whole different world. Loading the the big straight walled case is probably unlike anything he's ever done.
Varget is too slow for most reasonable smokeless loads in the 45/70, you end up with unburned powered kernels in the tube, don't bother with it.
The problem with the big straight walled case is that smokeless powders in the range of Varget won't get up to pressure. That big pill starts moving and the chamber size grows huge. The ones that are fast enough you can't get decent case fill before you get too much pressure. The case really was designed for 70 grains of black powder.
Try IMR3031 and Rx7, there are loads for both listed in the Lyman Manuals. If it's a Ruger #1/#3 or a Win Highwall he can get the 300s to about 2400 fps if his shoulder can take it. Get a Lyman Reloading Manual, they have a lot of good loads and it's broken down by Springfield, lever gun and Ruger loads.

I shoot imr4198 with my 300gr bullets out of a Marlin lever gun. Great accuracy. Imr4198 is a longer cut stick powder than H4198 which helps with case fill. In the little bit of playing with the 2 powders I found that I get better results with the IMR4198.
