45-70 case weight

I just reloaded 21 45-70 cases. Decided to weigh completed rounds. Every round has 350 grn bullet and identical grns of powder. Found that all starline brass weighed average of 587 grns. WW brass weighed average of 557 grns. Not a perfectionist but I found this interesting.

Winchester .45-70 brass is preferred by some due to it being thinner and lighter than their competition, and presumably having a greater case capacity. Starline recommends annealing their .45-70 brass each time that it's reload, IIRC, due to it being thicker and heavier than most others.

Now that's interesting. I've been reloading Starline cases (mostly nickel) for many years. Never annealed a case and never had a problem. Most of my loads are fairly hot too.

Turns out that I misremembered. They do recommend annealing, but only the first time, when loading black powder loads:

'Starline's .45-70 brass has been tested at elevated pressures suitable for Magnum heavy hunting loads in adequate gun systems. When loading with black powder, annealing of mouth may be necessary to allow case to properly seal chamber due to lower pressures generated by these loads. Starline Brass cases are produced very strong to withstand high pressure loads associated with smokeless hunting loads and since the only way to make brass harder is to work the material, the only option is to leave them stiffer so the customers can anneal for specific application.'
