You can get around being banned at particularly strict stores by the way you handle it. If the seller is reviewing your paperwork and says your address doesn’t match your driver license and you respond with “Oh, I wasn’t aware it had to. I will go to the DMV and update this to my new address and come back when my license is corrected”, there is no reason to flag you. If you say “Oh, I’ll change the paperwork to match what my license says”, that will be seen as you admitting that you are going to lie on the paperwork, which can’t be overlooked.

This is not the only possibility. Federal law allows a person to maintain two residences, and it is possible that the residence listed on the DL remains a legal residence that can be put on the 4473. One example is that college students often maintain legal residence at their parent's home and establish a second legal residence at college. Another example is people may establish a second legal residence at a vacation home. A third example is that a soldier may have a residence where he is stationed, but his domicile (and DL address) remains in his home state. Most states require a single domicile (the more permanent of the two residences) to be listed on the DL. However, it is not unacceptable to list the non-domicile residence on the 4473, but there are some details regarding supporting documentation. Most of this is explained in the extended instructions that accompany the 4473.

True.

As retired military, I kept my DL in my home state, but could buy guns by showing a set of official military orders that placed me at a base outside of the state on my DL.

Was perfectly legal, and never a problem.

I would usually ask in advance, and go with whatever was appropriate. Some states have a "contiguous state" rule, so I needed to use my orders. However, most states will sell long guns (not handguns) to any legal US resident (other than residents of CA, MA, etc), so I could simply use my out-of-state DL. Again, perfectly legal.

More great Info Men- Thank You In fact in this situation the guy has two propertys. He's purchased enough firearms he would normally know to use his DL address, but he must of been distracted or something and put his other address on the 4473. They told him he could bring in an auto registration or a utility bill with the other address on it, but they all go to his DL address. I'm sure he has paperwork to prove both propertys are his. He can just go to a different store though and I'm not sure it would be worth the trouble to him to try to prove it all to the first place. Main thing is he doesnt lose the ability to buy firearms everywhere even if he cant buy them at the one place, and we know he wont. Thanks Again napsac
