Lee die allows you to crimp the bullet without shaving it as can happen when seating and crimping at the same time. Simbly back your seating/crimp die out to seat only and then use the Lee to crimp. Yes, this adds another step but the Lee die also "post sizes" the cartridge for a positive fit in any firearm.

10-4. Understood. I back the seating stem out when roll-crimping rifle loads. I should have stated my question as, when crimping only (not with seating stroke) is there a need for the FCD? ie; due to recoil, does the FCD provide a more secure crimp than a roll-crimp?

Essentially, I'm trying to decide between the Lee 4 die set and the 3, or the RCBS 3 die set. These are about the only 2 mfrs I find available on the interweb in used or pre-owned dies.

Thanks!

I wouldn't say the Lee gives a better crimp, but it also removes any bulge that may have formed during the crimp process.
