4350 choice 6x47L

How much difference between H4350 and IMR4350 for the 6x47L and 115gr. I can get IMR4350 but no Hogdon. New gun and have not loaded high powder in almost 50 years-been shooting BPCR. THANKS LB

I have checked Hodgdon's burn rate chart and a few others>>> IMR 4350 is a tad, not by much, FASTER than H4350. There is also the "kernel size" of IMR 4350. IMR 4350 is considerably longer than H4350 and that COULD make a difference due to the fact that the load density is going to be higher with H4350 than IMR 4350. Having said all that, I would start out about 1 full grain less with the IMR "version" and work your way up from there..

have tried them both in my new 6x47L. gun didn't like imr-4350 loves h-4350.

I would go with a faster powder like Varget or RL15. I tried RL17 and IMR 4350 in a 6.5x47 I had a few years back and found that they didn't give great speeds compared to the faster powders. Had a 27" barrel so length wasnt an issue. Just not enough case volume for the slower powders. I was using Berger 130gr bullets. RL17 won hands down on accuracy over IMR4350. RL15 gave me both excellent speeds and accuracy.

But if speed is no concern, I would go with H4350 over IMR4350 just because of Hodgdon's superior resistance to temperature changes.

I have owned three 6x47L's and have worn two of them out trying to find a consistent powder/115 grn bullet combo. H4350 is the greatest powder on the planet IMHO, but never did reach the velocity/accuracy I was hoping for with the Bergers or DTAC's. Same with IMR 4350.

Try some IMR 7828SSC if you want to push the 115's up around 3000fps with 1/2-1/4 moa accuracy. Single digit SD's & ES. Temp stable from 30 degrees to 95 with a Heat Index over 100 with the humidity.

I'm jamming the DTAC's 4thou using the Alex Wheeler method for finding the lands with great accuracy and "0" pressure signs.

About 5 years ago I determined through testing both the IMR and H4350 that there was literally no difference on the chronograph and the groups size between the two through my 6xc which is similar to your 6x47.

After the great powder and bullet shortage of a couple years ago I began having accuracy variations with H4350. I tried IMR 4350 (again) and presto, it worked just like it did years before. The H4350 is definitely slower than IMR 4350 currently. Search any of the burn rate comparison charts and they show that.

My point is, I believe that you can tune your rifle with the IMR4350 if you can't find H4350. You may have to try some different primers, neck tensions, and perhaps bullet seating etc, but it should work out just fine until you get some H4350 to try. Just my experience for what it is worth. And your results may vary. WD

What sort of case fill levels did you have using imr 7828?
