4166 vs 4064

Any one had any luck useing the new imr 4166 in place of imr 4064 for .308..? The temperature swings here in Texas are so wild it would be nice to have something a little more temperature stable..

Thanks,
Shawn

I tried a pound of IMR-4066 and could not get a load that shot well. IMR-4064 seems do well but is temperature sensitive. For now I'm just sticking with Varget. On Hodgdon's site, it looks like in some loads, 4166 created more chamber pressure and less velocity.

Ok thanks, I was concerned about the pressure... I guess since i can't take the heat any way I will just keep taking a few months off during the summer.. Theres no sense in work up a load for 108 degrees when I don't shoot then... Is just been a few months since l got range time and I normally go 2-3 times a week.. I am getting all twitchy , I needs my fix...lol

I have been using 4166 in .308 with 155 grain bullets for 2 years with no issues whatsoever. I get the same accuracy and velocity as Varget with less powder and no temperature worries. The only issue I've found with it is that the accuracy window is a bit narrow compared to Varget or 4064.

I've tried it in a couple of 6br's with very good results. Competitively accurate, barrel cleans easily, seems reasonably temp stable and we've switched lot numbers and it hasn't affected the load a bit. From my experience it's definitely worth a try.

There's a fellow at our club that uses it in his 308 and swears by it. He won't share load data so I have no idea what his load is. He says he just got tired of trying to find varget all the time. JME.WD
