SELLING 416 Ruger Custom Builld

I know the day will come when I regret selling this rifle. I had it built with the intentions of taking it to Africa for Cape buffalo. An opportunity has popped up that will put that plan off into the far future. This rifle came to me as a 300 RUM with an octagon barrel. I was drawn to it by the stock not the caliber. Turns out to be a stunning piece of California Black Walnut. The original 300 Rum barrel had a builders name I was able to track down in California. He didn’t remember the rifle itself but when he saw a picture of the wood he said he certainly remembered the stock. He had a neighbor lose a huge Black walnut tree in the early 80’s and he had some stunning sticks made from it. Dan Coffin in Victor MT put a 416 barrel from McGowen on it and chamber it to 416 ruger for me. He lightened the trigger to 3 pounds and took out any creep. I was able to put a load together that shoots 350 grain tsx into a tiny cloverleaf at 50 yards. It has been ceracoated in a matte Black. From the bench and sand bags it is an actual pleasure to shoot. ( I had 458 lott for awhile and I swear the Lott stood for a Lott of recoil!). Instead of cross bolts it has a metal block behind the action lug and a epoxied block behind a barrel lug. I have a set of Redding dies and 39 brass that will go with the rifle. Load data and brass can stay loaded if you would like. Bases are included also but scope and rings are not. That last finishing touch this rifle needs is a barrel band and swivel stud installed in the stock. Please message any questions and I would be happy to send my number if someone is serious and wants to talk.

There were no markings except a serial number left on the action when I got it. Our best guess was Zastava or maybe Mark x.

It was most likely originally a Herters J-9 which was built on a Yuoslav Mauser (Zastava) that was the same as the Interarms Mark-X. The Herters J-9 was marked on the barrel not the action, I have one that is identical to this one. Very good actions.
