Rifling: Manufacturing: Button Rifling
In our last post, we studied a method of rifling called Broach Rifling. Now we will study another method of rifling called Button Rifling. This is a method that was in development since the end of the 19th century, but wasn't really perfected until the 1940s or so by employees of Remington Corporation. It is the most common method of manufacturing rifled barrels in the United States today.

That really seems funny that Douglas was making button barrels in 1948,this is their 66 year in the business. I sure never saw a button barrel in the 721's and the 40X came out in in 1962…….. So much for history. Tim did say they were working on them at the same time …….. jim

Regarding button rifling:

A gentleman from Dryden NY, Ross Sherman, spent much time with the Harts, Mike Walker and Ed Shilen. Shilen apprenticed in Ross's shop in Dryden before his days in other parts of NY then Texas. Ross did carbide buttons, made the Superior Action, was inducted into the BR hall, made bullets and dies, was a musician. He was instrumental in the button method from the 40's into the 60's. One of those behind the scenes heroes of the early BR days. His Superior action rifles did very well in the early 60's. Walker often had him in at Remington do R and D. Walker credited him with much of the success of the button process.

FWIW- When Remington was having accuracy problems with their Model 504 (their premium rimfire bolt gun) they started putting Shilen bbls. on their HB models which also had Eley match chambers. Perhaps Shilen has been one of the sources of 40X, XB and custom shop guns bbls.

I know Remington always made their own barrels.
as to button rifling Ross sure did do the RAND D for Remington.
Ross also made the first start gauges for the Springfield rifles and also made the broach's
for rifling during WW2 Remington had Ross work on and finally develop the button process.
Ed Shillen was working for Ross and finally John Dewey at Clinton Corners NY.
Clyde hart had to get Permission from Remington to have Ross make the buttons for the button process.
Mike Walker was also part of the Hart Barrel operation { silent partner}
Douglas pulls their buttons along with Shillen Hart Pushes their buttons.
Different process Hart barrels are hand lapped , Douglas are double button pulled and not lapped.
Shillen barrels are lapped. The barrels on the 40xBR were made by Remington and hand lapped, and air gauged.
The Remington barrels had a Diamond stamped on the barrels {Remington Trade mark indicating diamond lapped.
THey were great barrels but a bit softer then Hart barrels.

I would not change a thing on that rifle Just use the old stock and have it pillar bedded
If the throat starts to ware have it set back.
