40x ?

guys i have a rem. 40xbr in 222 it is a single shot and hasnt seen action in about 3yrs and looks brand new older type. was wondering is it better than a reapeter in a rem. 40x that is also the older type in 6mm ackley . which is what i was looking for . would it be wise to sell the 222 and buy the 6mm ai. i am a hunter and not a bench rest guy . what would you guys do.

I think you`d be better off keeping the 222. It will out shoot most of us. It is a solid, accurate shooter. It will never loose its value, and its cheap to load for. If you want a 6mmAI, pick up a used 700SA at a later date. This forum is a great place to find a bargain, and 700`s can be as accurate as 40x repeaters. Unless you are constantly shooting in a hurricane, wring the most out of your 222.

If you are interested in a 6mm AI I have one on consignment. It is a 40X action built by Richard Franklin and is a 'shooter'. Contact me by PM

I never could understand the “40X Repeater” thing.
That is a short action 700 with a different name stamped on it.
If your aim is just hunting, buy a Savage model 12 preferably a used one, and put a ready to go Shilen barrel on it in 6mm Ackley. Keep your 222 and have fun with it.

I am with Jackie... I never understood the fascination with 40X when a repeater was involved ( I had plenty of Rem 700s and good few 40X / 40XC in my shooting time - I built the first Rem 700 .338 Lapua in US thus know the action well. Remington claims the 40X is more accurate and has better tolerances. A good barrel and a gunsmith will negate the so called superior aspect of the 40X.

I probably trued 5 or 6 40X’s in my time, hand the only thing I could ascertain as being different than a 700 was lack of a magazine cutaway and the name rolled on the side.

What year was the first 700 in 338lm built? I did one and was scared to sell it

If you want a REAL big game hunting rifle, get a CRF M-70. They are reliable, durable, and as accurate as anything else. Leave the 700s for budget grade varmint hunting........
