my 40X 222 Rem mag has an actual date on the bottom of the barrel, 8-68 S SM I figure it is a Shilen stainless match, rebarrelled in 8-1968
 
Remington uses Remongton barrels, not Shilen. If it is in fact a Shilen barrel, then it is VERY likely a rebarreled action, which is also indicated by the 6-68 as this is not normla for Remington.

Does it have the Remington role stamps on the barrel?
