40x with mcmillian benchrest stock, average or above?

hey guys i just traded for a 40x heavy bbl with mcmillian benchrest stock, tuner (hoen i think) , trigger breaks at 2.8oz to 3.0oz consistently . i took it out with several diff lots and diff ammo and shot at 40 yards then 100 yards. what kind of groups should i expect? i had never shot a 22lr at 100 and was very happy. best groups at 100 yards in calm conditions were .611, .636, .623, .826, .876.. is this a keeper, i really dont know what to expect from this rifle(my other 22 is a ruger 10-22)? these were all 5 shot groups, just wondering how this stacks up .

I just started shooting a 22 rf myself. We have a 22 fclass league here in Mississippi. Sounds like yours is shooting good to me. Here is a target that I shot yesterday from 100 yrds. Wind was calm. I don't know what it measures, but it is a score of 100. The x is 1/2 moa and 10 ring is 1 moa. That's 10 shots.

In response to your question as to whether that rifle is a keeper or not, 40X's generally are fine shootin rifles and used by many in competitions. All the extras you mentioned make it even better. I shoot in local competitions (don't own a 40X) which are all at 50 yds or 50 meters, But those groups you listed sound good to me for 100 yds. Because you didn't list the ammo you tried, it's difficult to make suggestions on what you could try to improve the accuracy. But some of the guys I know with 40X's use RW-50, Federal Ultra Match (UM22), Eley Tenex (Red), Lapua Midas CenterX or Lapua Midas Plus to name a few that provide them excellent grouping. Now just in case you aren't doing so, most top and serious shooters dry patch their barrels when changing ammo. And after that, it'll usually takes you about 5 - 7 shots for the barrel to be "greased" up and those compunds are different for each manufacturer. But if it were me, I'd darn sure keep that baby and work on finding the ammo she likes the best and get that Hoehn/Harrel Tuner set to where she enjoys the best harmonics. Remember, tuners only make a good barrel even better. Good luck and have fun with that baby!

thanks for the info, two of the groups in the .6 range were rws r-50, the best group was eley eps black box. it seemed to outshoot the red box in the lot numbers i had. had some old midas m but it didnt like it. i made a good trade on the 40x and its fun to shoot so guess ill keep it and have fun..

Welcome to rimfire benchrest! Finding the right ammo for your rifle is half the battle! If you want your ammo testing and accuracy to be more precise, then have someone with a borescope show you the carbon ring just forward of the chamber. I can almost be sure there is one since most people do not have an effective cleaning regement to control the carbon. What you will find might surprise you!

ok im gonna open the can of worms but is rimfire cleaning any diff than centerfire(other than lead instead of copper)? i use butches and i do brush and use a bore guide, will this work on lead lubed bullets as well?

That is a good question. I shoot both centerfire and rimfire benchrest. I also own a bore scope so my results are not guessing whether the bore is clean or not. My cleaning method for rimfire is different. For solvent I recomend Bore Tech Rimfire Blend Bore Cleaning Solvent. Once you know for sure you have a clean barrel including that pesky carbon ring, then cleaning every 100 rounds with just a patch would be sufficient. For a bore brush in my rimfire barrels I use a nylon made by Isso. They are not cheap but will last a long time. I use a bore brush to remove the carbon ring and also run the brush down the barrel a couple of times. For carbon ring removal with the nylon brush use Isso bore paste.

I asked CZ about flyers with my 452 and they asked if I had cleaned it recently. I replied no, and mentioned the lead ring and never heard anything more. I didn't really expect much though.
