Hey gang
I just bought a Remington 40X 22LR
I wondered if someone can help me decipher the barrel code and serial number so i can figure when it was built
Photo of barrel code attached it looks like W O L B the serial number is 245XXB
It is also marked
US
22 LONG RIFLE It is a Heavy barrel / 700 action

I really appreciate help from the 40x experts
I plan on shooting it in a Vintage class we have local ( scoped) and then in an Open Sight Class we have at another local club
It looks like the factory trigger which checked at about 1 lb 3 oz and felt pretty decent

It sure looks factory but who knows you could be right on. I will try and get pic of the proofs on the other side.

Here are the proofs on the right side of the barrel
barrel is 25 5/16ths from the lug it is drilled and tapped for front sight blocks etc
It looks like it has been on there a long time--the bore shows plenty of age
Could it have been a Factory replacement?
Anybody have any ideas??
Thanks

It appears to be Remington. The REP or RFP (not sure) is a Remington Proof mark. At least one of the other marks is an inspection mark. The B at the end of the serial number usually means heavy barrel. The barrel could have been replaced but that too should be in the codes. Are there any other markings on the left side of the barrel such as a three letter or two letter code just forward of the receiver?

Assuming the WOLB means anything, I would ignore the LB as it seems poorly stamped. That would put it around 1994. But if it's a government gun or CMP it probably means little

Nothing else but what I have shown is stamped
I was just curious--it really only matters if it will group well.
Scope rail is on the way will know very soon
Seller said it was a shooter--I bet it will be

Heck of a month July 64
Ford introduced the Mustang,LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act and China tested their first atomic bomb.

Recently received a 40 x mine also has the 4 letters on the barrel WDHL. Couple of questions. How do you know what year "D" to use and what are the third and forth letters for?

Nice 40 XB, the B's were made on a different receiver than the earlier X's. They also had a swept back bolt handle where the earlier X's had a straight bolt handle. Hope it's a shooter!

Install some Redfield sights and have fun.

Remington says a two or three letter code on the left hand of the barrel. How do you know which two letters to use when they're all four? Depending on which two or three you choose you could get a span of 40 years. I must be missing something here.

The only 40X I have ever dated was based on the serial number. I don't recall looking at codes so I must have contacted Remington. I think it was 1954 serial number 350. Pristine too.

Oh, and to your question, just google date a 40X or some such and it will give you the months and years of the codes if you can figure out which two or three letters to use.

Just to clarify and it may not apply to 40X and 40XB. Remington for a few years used a two letter year code such as WW. Also if the firearm was returned to Remington, they put a second date code to reflect repairs.
