Old time shooting buddy of mine is selling his 40X in .17 Remington. it has the Kevlar stock, but he is keeping his scope. It's good overall condition 90+ % I would say easy.
What is a fair price to give him for it? I don't have a .17 Remington which is the only reason I am interested in the caliber

Thats a rare rifle if its not a re barrel. Never heard of one in my lifetime.
The ones on the gun boards are way over priced, but thats the market price. LDS

You can find bdl sporters in 17rem. Theyll go for about half price. I figure that 40x should go for $1500 unless its an extremely rare collector item. I know ive never seen one in 17rem

It's all factory and seems to be extremely rare. I don't wanna pay crazy money for it just cuz I don't have a 17 rem. But I guess it's whatever the market will bare.

If the barrel is is factory Remington marked, it was probably a special order through their custom shop when the company used to take such offer such work.

Post a photo, especially of the right (shooters right) side of the receiver and first two inches of barrel. Want to see those proof marks.

40X was a custom shop rifle, so it is possible that someone ordered it from the factory as a 17, but I am thinking a rebarrel. Photo of gun would help us give a fair price.

A 40XB rangemaster, in good to excellent range, rebarreled with a quality barrel by a reputable smith would run about $1400 plus or minus, depending on who made that barrel. IF it is a factory custom shop in 17, now we are talking oddball, and provenence will matter.

if it is a 40X (old 722 like action with a blued barrel) , it will be harder to determine if it was a factory barrel. Again, need photos. Also, could it be a 40XBR? It will say on the left of receiver.

Let us know what you can do to get this info to us to review for ya,
