4064 Powder

I want to reload .223 and use 60gr to 70gr bullets. Is 4064 powder good to use-I know there are better-Varget,H335 etc etc. Anyone have any experience with 4064 powder??? Tnx

IMR 4064 will shoot ok. It does not meter as well thru a powder measure as it has long granules so you need to trickle the last bit. The Accurate 4064 is shorter granules and about the same burn rate but not the same, work up the load with which you have.

IMR 4064 is a very good powder. For instance it works very well in .308 with 155 to 175 gr bullets. It works well with heavier bullets in .223.

Some folks say it's more temperature sensitive than others, I take the view that it's more a problem when you're pushing the upper end of the charge weight range hard.

I like the old IMR powders, Improved Military Rifle. While they have perhaps a narrower range of performance, they perform very well within that range.

My 223 Rem has shot the best groups with IMR 4064 using the 53gr SMK & 55gr SPT. Both are flat base bullets and the gun has 1 in 12 twist. Tried H4895 & groups were ok. Ultimately went to Varget because groups were more consistent, but best groups were with the old trusty 4064. Biggest drawback is that 4064 doesn't meter well.

You might want to try using a dipper to throw 4064 and finishing up with your powder trickler if you want to avoid the stick powder metering aggravations associated with use of a powder measure. Or to speed things up slightly, split the difference; throw a light charge with the measure and tolerate the partial sticks of powder cut by the drum and again, finish up with the trickler.

Thanks for help guys. Will continue load development with Varget and try SMP 842 and RL-15 too. Will be using SMK 69gr,Barnes 69g and maybe Nosler 69gr-if I can find some.
