40-X Makeover

This beauty started life as a single shot 40-XB KS Varmint Special that I bought brand new in 1987 for $840.00. It had the Kevlar stock, factory 2 ounce trigger, polished blued action, and a 27 1/4" S/S heavy barrel chambered in 22-250. Through the years it's had three other stocks and more than twice that many barrels. Except for another barrel here and there, it's in it's last rendition.(hopefully) All set now for some long range prairie doggin'.

The action was trued and and the lug ground and pinned a long time ago. I sent it off to Eddie this winter to get Ceracoated in graphite black. The bolt was fluted by Karl, the Badger knob, handle screw, and bolt bushing handled by Gre'-Tan.

The barrel on it now is one that wouldn't quite cut it on my 1000 yard competition gun, so I had it cut off and re-chambered to this action. It's a 6MM heavy varmint 28" Rock 8 twist chambered in 6 Dasher. Current load is Lapua brass, moly plated 105 A-Max, fueled by R-15 and sparked by 7 1/2's.

The stock is a McM Marksman with sniper fill in black/dark gray/medium gray camo weighing 49 ounces.

Nightforce 40 MOA bases on top, Seekins high rings, and a 5.5-22x50 Nightforce with the NP-R1 reticle round out the package. Total weight is 14 pounds, 14 ounces.

So I took it out the other day for a little play time.

First up was a quick check at 300.

Next up was to move on back a bit.

So across the crick, up the hill, across two ditches, up another hill, and finally back down. Hit the rangefinder, 707.

All set, check the dope, click it, and let 5 rip.

Just enough mirage that I couldn't see the holes. Too much effort to go check, so I loaded up and went back up the hill some, and set up again. Rangefinder said 1052. Dialed it in and pounded out five more.

I think I'll leave it alone for a while now........

SWEET! i like it.
Good shooting.

is that the urban camo pattern on the stock in just another color?
i have seen that pattern in several different color's, like red, black, yellow and a few others i been contemplating what color to go with on my short range benchrest stock and was thinking of doing the urban camo(to be different) but have decided on the red with black&gray swirl, its popular and seems alot of others are useing it, but i like it.
But i do like the black/lt gray/dk gray, it fits that rifle and looks good.

It's not urban, per se. Urban is the black/blue/and gray(?) mix. But you are correct in that it's just the large, three color camo pattern with my choice of the three. They have 7 distinct, named, camo patterns that are defined by the color combinations, in either a 3 or 4 color pattern. When you specify the colors, the first one stated is the dominate color, followed by the others, even when ordering a 50/50 mix. The beauty is you'll never get the same one twice.

Looks like good use of a great rifle. My XC-KS is marked 7.62 NATO & I was told not many were made so I only shoot at home. 100M wind sheltered range that I put in when building the house. 100M is no challenge for that gun off bipod,so would you sell or custom this rifle?

rvn,

After a little research on your gun, I don't think I'd mess with it.

I think I'd leave it as is and shoot it,

Sell it to fund a new build,

Or, the best option, keep it and build what you want from scratch. ;D

Alf,thanks for your input. I feel guilty hunting with it,I'm actually just harvesting,no fair sport here in New England. It might be time to sell to somebody that knows what they have and can make proper use of it. I still have a round count of 261,fed gmm 168,never saw need to change. I can't load ammo that good. Thank you.

I did not look at the author of the thread when I started
reading. When I got to the Pic I said to myself that looks
like ALF. I was right.

My 2 nd 40-X was a SS KS in 6mm Rem. and I love it.
I shot metal at 1000 yd for the first time with it.

Love your gun. That 1,000 yd group is a DANDY.

Great gun, great shooter. Thanks for the pick and story.
