? 4 fireforming 22-250 to AI

Got me a pre-chambered 22-250 AI barrel in a deal here. I see that the 22-250 Rem case is .020 longer in the base to the NK Shoulder junction dimension than the AI is. My question is " does the stnd. 22-250 case when fireformed in the AI barrel shrink in the above mentioned dimension as the body expands and the shoulder flattens out to 40* " ? I'm thinking down the line about Bolt Face to barrel clearance and possibly eventually needing a small base die if it doesn't shrink. Any advice on fireforming 22-250 to 22-250 AI would be appreciated, Thanks !

The Ackley Improved cases if headspaced properly are designed to be a crush fit on the parent case. The crush fit should occur at the neck shoulder junction of the unfired case. Has this barrel been headspaced to your action ?? If not take it to a gunsmith please.

.020" is a bit much for head space crush fit for ackley shoulder fire forming IMO.

Just because a barrel screws on there doesnt mean it fits. Your way off if your measurements are correct and like was said above you need to send that off to a gunsmith (one that understands ackley chamberings for sure- not every one does)

The sierra manual won't tell you about your barrel/chamber. That is the reamer maker/gunsmiths job. Is this a shouldered barrel, or are you using a nut?

The differential of measures are simply what I've observed in the manual, I am not way off as I've done nothing to establish these measurements. I agree that the Ackley Improvements demand some special understanding and that's what I'm looking for.

With a savage action and barrel nut I would set head space with a new unfired brass at zero headspace. Then go anouther .004 in for a crush fit and let the case dimensions come out as they will after fire forming. Just make sure you have a slight feel of the bolt closing on the new case. Check headspace with a stripped bolt also.

My 250 Ackley has a .004 crush fit. Make it easy on yourself and buy a 22-250AI go gauge.
Thankyou for your recommendation! So the differences between a parent 22-250 case nk/sh/ junc. to base length VS the 22-250 AI same dimension has been figured in already in order that the .004 " crush fit in your rifle is all that interferes with the fireforming process using a parent 22-250 case in the 22-250 AI chamber .
I'm to assume then that when the pre chambered 22-250 AI barrel I have is fitted up to my action using the 22-250 AI GO GUAGE that fireforming using parent unfired 22-250 brass can be done ?

Thanks for your answer to my question which gladly included no false accusations or assumptions of stupidity.

Absolutely.
