3D Printed NDM-86 Dragunov magazine

So I bought a Norinco NDM-86 Dragunov chambered in 7.62x51 back in 2010. It's one of my favorite rifles that I own, my only real complaint has been the lack of magazine options available. There is one currently selling on Gunbroker for $300.

Being an engineering major and having spent the last few years 3d printing, I decided it was finally time to fix this issue. As a result I have my first completed prototype .308 Dragunov magazine. It uses the spring from a 10rd Magpul .308 magazine, but all other parts are printed in PLA+ currently. It holds ten rounds, seats perfectly in the receiver and feeds amazingly by hand. I also made sure to include a LRBHO function as many of the magazine conversions for this gun almost never have this feature.

Currently the only issues I can see is some minor bulging at around 0.8mm over the normal width when fully loaded, but it doesn't seem to effect loading and unloading the magazine from the rifle in any real significant way. A full mag will not drop free, but an empty mag has no issues falling free on its own. Something to work on in future iterations, but not a deal breaker ATM.

So far it works flawlessly cycling by hand so I will be taking it out within the next week to see how it does on the range before I clean up the lines, add some ribs to the external geometry and make this thing look pretty. Overall I spent around 20 bucks on the magpul magazine I stole the spring from, and around 5 bucks in PLA+ for a total savings of $275.

I would think you could cut some sheet metal and then put the radius at the top of the metal and epoxy it on the inside of the mag to stiffen up the feed lips.

Nice job by the way!

The way I look at that magazine on GB, If I had your rifle I would buy the magazine at that price, It will most likely be worth $600.00 in ten years? You know what the rifle price has done since 2010? I remember when those rifles were selling for $1200.00

Thanks, I was actually considering doing just that when I start getting to a completely finalized design, though I was planning to do it from the outside, since it would be a bit easier to do. At the moment its by no means a necessity though.

I may also experiment with making the internal wall a bit thicker (going from 2-3mm) and see what kind of impact that has on deformation. This is also only printed in PLA+ so I haven't even tried it in some of the more rugged materials yet. If I can get it a bit more ironed out I may see what I can do with Zytel filament.

The magazines have actually been pretty stable in price since my roomate lost 2 of them back in 2011. I started looking for more back then and they were still around the 300$ price point so if anything they may be cheaper if we start looking at the value of the dollar. The rifle itself, however, has doubled in the same time frame.

I could have bought a Tiger just 3 years ago for $3000.00, I'm still beating myself up for that! I still have my PSL I bought in 05 though and it's still mint! I love the 7.62x54R Cartridge, It's an inherently accurate cartridge and I have wild-catted it up and down.

You may can put waffles on the outside to stiffen it a bit
yeah, that was what I meant about adding ribs to the outside. I want to make sure it functions under firing conditions first before I clean up the external bits. A pretty mag that doesn't cycle properly is just a paperweight after all.

Update:
I've added some external geometry to the magazine to stiffen the walls a bit and make it look neat. remodeled the baseplate to blend with the mag body. The lock plate and hole in the baseplate was designed to be able to take the mag apart using the base of a round or spent casing. The follower was slightly modified to reduce chance of tilting. Feeds well and looks great IMO. Going out tomorrow to put holes in paper with it.
