375 H&H 0r 416 Rem Mag

Ok here is my dilema

I have a LH Rem Model 700 in 7mm Rem Mag sitting in the gun safe.

Next year I am planning to go to Africa so decided hell lets do something with the old 7mm.

I like 375 H&H,apart from ammo costs) but in some place you have to have above .400 so I thought maybe 416 Rem Mag.

Anyone had experience with these calibres?

Also in standard form the 7mm has a composite stock but I wonder if a heavier wooden stock might be beneficial.

Before you spend the money to re-stock and re-barrel your 7mm Mag, you might have a look at the CZ 550 Safari. I bought one in .375 H&H for my dad, put a 1-4x Leupold on it with Warne QD mounts so the iron sights could be used if needed, very handy on a dangerous game rifle). The CZ will be his buffalo rifle on safari this summer. Not much fun to shoot from the bench, though -- the set trigger is great, right up until the time you touch it off and that .375 gives you a healthy dose of recoil.

The CZ does put Barnes solids and TSX to the same point of aim at 100yd, which is nice for a rifle that will be used for a variety of thin-skinned and thick-skinned game. Plus, unlike the Rem action, the CZ has the typical '98 Mauser controlled round feeding and a fixed ejector, which generally are considered more reliable when things get interesting around dangerous game. The CZ magazine holds a generous helping of .375,5 rounds), too.

I shot an elk and a pronghorn on a shakedown cruise with the .375 in September -- to nobody's surprise the 300gr Barnes TSX whistled right on through in both cases.

When my dad and I went to Zimbabwe for plains game in 2007 we brought a Rem 700 Sendero in .300 Win with 180gr Barnes TSX -- you might want to bring your 7mm Mag for the same kind of hunting, especially if you are going to South Africa or Namibia where the plains game shots can be a little longer than in the mopane woodland habitats along the Zambezi. We're bringing the Sendero and the CZ to SA and Namibia this summer.

I have no experience with the .416, and I'm not sure I want to!

Have a great time in Africa. You won't want to come back.

My problem is I am Left Handed so not many options on the action.

I have the Rem 700 BDL Left Handed in .270

I notice the Rem 700 KS Safari uses the composite stock and the whole package weighs in at 9lbs.

I like the 416 cal. I have a Rigby not a Rem but the caliber is awesome. If you want you can load it down or up,lead or jacketed) Just make sure that the cart. AOL will fit your magazine.

Thanks CJ6

I will use the Wyatts extended magazine box.

Hopefully this will give me the extra clearance.

I liked the look of the bolt action double rifle, but hell pockets are only so deep.

I think it ran like $35K

I'd build a 375 Ruger on the 7 Mag action, in fact I did.

I had a 375 H&H and a 416 RM. Sold them both and built a Ruger on a S/S 700 L/A. Don't need a Wyatts either.

Yep the 375 Ruger would be a good option also so would the 416 Ruger. But..... finding those cartridges in Africa might be a bit tough.

I went through the same decision several years ago. I had a very old 375 H&H but it needed some work. I opted for a new 416 RM in a M70 safari grade. There are some differences in the Rem and Rigby. I was told that the heat messed with the pressures on the Remmy but the Rigby was OK. I experienced no problems though,no sign of pressure issues on fired cases). The Remmy ammo is a little cheaper than the Rigby or it was at the time.

The Remmy was not bad on the shoulder but I took the wood off and replaced it with an HS Precision. I added a Leupold scope with QD rings so the iron sights could be used if needed. All in all, I was more than pleased with the 416.

Well right or wrong I have settled on 416 RM

I will look at both wood and composite stocks.
HS Precision and Macmillan

Myself as well.i have a Rigby and a Taylor and throttled down with lead bullets they become pleasant to shoot and are very accurate.

It sounds like you dilemma is you haven't done your research.

.375H&H, the queen of the medium bores, has been refered to as the heaviest rifle that anyone can learn to shoot. The .400's are heavier still, and offer less range vs the .375H&H that will easily run to 300y, and duplicate the .30-06 150gr trajectory to boot.

But first, you need to figure out what you need.

#1 ask you PH, you are booking, what his thoughts are and the type of game you are after.
#2, The 416 does pack a little more energy, but the old 375 has been taking every species of game in Africa for centuries and even in out of the way places, if you need more ammunition, you can usually find 375, where as the 416 Rem, not so much so.
But mainly, consider, what ever caliber you get and take, make sure it is the one you can shoot the most accurate with and place the bullet, either solid or soft point in the proper spot, this first shot.
In years past I always shot the 375 with both 300 grain solids and SP's, they just work and most PH's will agree.
They carry the heavy calibers as back up, for you and their protection, so keep that in mind also.

The 416 Remington has a big push and not a sharp recoil. I'm finishing my 375 H&H now as we have been invaded with some pretty vicious possums and armadillo.
Why does the 416 rigby have such a different recoil than the 416 remington? The remington isnt bad at all to me but the rigby is harsh
