Excuse the ignorance, but what is the difference between a 223 bore and the bore for 22-250?

So, can a 223 barrel be bored out to 22-250 safely?

Both barrels for the 223 and the 22/250 have the same size hole in them .224 diameter, so boring out the 223 to 22/250 won't do much other than cutting air...
It's like trying to open up a 1 inch tube with a 1 inch drill................

The 223 can absolutely be rechambered to 22-250. Both use a .224 bullet.

To my knowledge some smaller and older 22 caliber centerfires used .223 bullets like the 22 Hornet.

I dont understand Preachers "cutting air" comment. There is a huge difference in chamber size.

To be clever, you actually cant bore a 223 to 22-250 and go shooting. You will need another bolt face to do that. Same goes for going from 22-250 to 223. But yes the barrels all start as the same size bore and just get chambered as to what ever the gun is going to be.

I think the confusion was created by the use of the word bored. Back in the day some shooters would have their barrels re-bored, say from 22 caliber to 6MM caliber. It's a practice that I don't believe is very popular today but I'm sure there is someone out there that probably still does it. Rechambering is a different story and as DCRYDER pointed out, a .223 can be re-chambered to a .22-250 but the bolt face must be either opened up or replaced with a bolt that has a .308 sized bolt face.

Yes back in the day a rebored barrel could be seen as a great savings as good gun barrel material was hard to come by until the 50's according to stores my dad told. It brings back a memory of my first .22, a sleeved Win. that needed to be done again, but it was fun shootin' it.
