.357 Mag Lever Rifle Loads?

We don't really have a section for handgun caliber stuff so here it is. Marlin 1894 in .357

I've wanted one since the Dark series came out, and quickly went away. The .357 models are fresh out of the factory and available now. I had to have it.

Put about 20 rounds through it. Pretty easy to hit an ipsc target at 200 yards. Just wanted to share my new toy!

I shoot Lever Action Silhouette with a "low rent" Rossi .357 Mag rifle. I like its 24" octagon barrel better than the lighter 20" carbines. Buckhorn sights and I don't get along very well, so it sports a Marbles tang sight and a Lyman 17A front sight. The rifle does fine - I am the limiting factor.

You ask about favorite loads. I've monkeyed around and settled on Badman's 157 gr 0.358" round nose flat point lead bullet. It's a flat base bullet (no gas check). I shot lots of IMR4227 and found it to be nicely accurate. I grew annoyed at the unburned powder granules littered throughout the action. Just wait, it's gonna jam something, I figured. I found that HS-6 and 2400 work well with the same bullet, and they burn properly. Not quite as accurate as IMR4227, but good enough for this wobbly offhand shooter.

My fav .357 loading for my 52yo Rossi 92 is a 140gr Hornady XTP over 10gr Hodgdon HS-6. It just plain works and there has not been a black tail deer or coyote that has survived being shot with it.

I absolutely love this! I’ve been playing with four of the new Ruger Marlins, what a hoot with a can. I have a couple of the 45-70s, a 30-30 and a 44 mag. I’m waiting for the 357 in the new Dark but I may not have the patience and I may end up following your lead and getting that same rifle or the trapper.

The 30-30 with 170 grain flat points and unique has been too much fun. I have it dialed in at 1060 fps and it’s Hollywood quiet. Everyone who shoots it wants it, brings out the youngster in ya.

Tagging in.

I want a red dot for it. I have the stigmatisms, so it'd need to be a Trijicon MRO HD... expensive... but nice. :)

Being an F-Class guy... I really want to find a bipod for it and shoot groups at 200

15.0 gr IMR 4227 CCI 550 Mag Primer and a Missouri (Actually 184 gr upon weighing) 180 gr WFN 18 BN Hardness (I believe) shot around 1100 fps out of my S&W 686 Plus (6”) was incredibly accurate using a 0 magnification Holographic sight With a 3 MOA Dot. Could hit a 12”x18” steel plate 7 out of 7 shots with REGULARITY at 120 plus yards resting elbows on my knees in a seated position And 70% of the time at 150 plus yards standing off hand. The WFN is a killer with the “splash” factor of the wide meplat.

Howdy !

My go-to .357Mag load for revolver use, and in an 1894SC is:

14.5gr WW296 and SP Magnum primer under a Lyman SWC of 158-172gr.
These don't have to be GC, but you might want to; for your COWBOY excitement !

This load was the minimum charge of WW296 Winchester ( Olin ) used to quote for 158gr
.357Mag loads, in their former reloading hand-out pamphlet. Has shot really well, for me.

With regards,
357Mag

A max charge of H110 and a 158 gr Hornady XTP-FP. This yields 1710 fps in my Henry Big Boy carbine. Holes are cutting at 50 yards.
