357 HELP NEEDED

I'm needing help with loading the 357 maximum! I'm warming to load the Hornady FTX tipped bullets with my RCBS dies and I'm having trouble with a tips getting crushed. Any help that you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated!

I haven't loaded mine in over 10 years. I always used Speer 180g Rifle flat tip bullets with H110 and AA1680. Shouldn't be contacting or pressuring the bullet tip. ??? Sorry cant be more help. Touching holes at 100 yds btw with Lone Eagle pistol.

Check the above. Could be a seating stem that doesn't fit the bullet. It should NOT contact the bullet tip (meplat) and should contact low on the bullet's ogive. Companies often have custom seating stems in stock or will make you a custom seating stem.
Does the bullet require trimming the cases to handle that specific bullet, and have you trimmed the cases?
In reality, it is best to start with the most typical bullet and weight used to learn how to reload a given cartridge, such as a 158gn or 170gn FMJ.

Hornady makes a special seating stem for the ftx. Your normal seating stem is probably pushing directly on the plastic rather than the jacket.

For my max loading tipped bullets I drilled out the seating stem and bedded it to the bullet so no contact is on the tips

Call RCBS and ask them if the have seater stem for Flex Tips. I did and they sent me new stem for free.

I just did this for my new rmr bullets and they are sending me a free stem. First customer interaction and cant say I'm not happy.

I actually called RCBS yesterday and I got some rude guy that was no help at all! I have never had that experience with RCBS before and it really pissed me off! I told him Redding never acted like they didn't care about their customers like he did! He said he gets calls about this constantly and they can't make a seater plug to fit every bullet!

My interaction was via email so i can speak to their phone service. Every company has those people who hate their job and do not represent the company has a hole. I say again a holes.

You can drill out the seating tip .

I've heard about people doing that, but what do you do, just drill past where the tip would hit?

I would recall RCBS and try again. Get the name of whom you spoke with and the time if you get an a hole. I've always had very good customer service with RCBS . It would be easier than drilling and you will get the proper seating stem.

Drill in steps trying to form a shape like your projectile. Then spin in drill and smooth with sandpaper or lapping compound . One of those stepped universal drills may work .

Hornady FTX tipped bullets

Call Hornady. Its there unconventional design that seems to be causing the problem. But they may tell you to buy their dies.

At times, Hornady doesn't follow SAAMI standards. Case length on some cartridges is one.

Lee has this posted for correcting seat plug fit.

Many times, you can fix this yourself through the use of a drill press. Secure the seater plug under a 3/32" bit and drill further into it. The distance should never be increased by more than 1/4". If this does not solve the issue, we recommend sending it to us.

Lee plug is different. But makes room for the pointy nose.
