350 Legend Split Cases

Has anyone else experienced split cases with Federal 180 powershok? I had 4 cases with vertical splits starting near the midpoint of the case running toward the casehead. These were shot in 80° weather last week.

Sounds like they might have been over pressure because of the hot weather. Especially if they were in direct sunlight.

seen a lot of information on the web where some recommend using 357 ammo in 350 legend reloads. I stopped a local gun shop and the guy told me I need to reload with 9mm dia (.350); the 357 (.358 is too large) suspect this causes higher pressure. also seen info on the web with "too hot" a load whereby primers are pushing out. all part of the same issue.

When I was at Cabela's, there was a sign about a recall on some 350 legend ammo and when I inquired about it. They said that the factory had hot loaded some of the ammo. I would go online and check it out.

9mm, 38 special and 357 jacketed loads are typically sized 0.355". Lead rounds are 0.356 to 0.357.

er...no. The 9mm projectile is .355, the 38 and 357 are .357. Suggest that you check Sierra's website. The .355 is the correct diameter for the Legend, rather than the 358 for the other "350" calibres.

There's chat on other forums of using .357's in the Legend, but given the increase in pressure, I would be wary.

I can also see a use for the lighter 9mm projectiles in the Legend with an AR platform, for paper or speed steel at a lower cost.

If you've seen information like this I'd stop going to those sites. SAAMI specs .357 -.003 bullet diameter as designed by Winchester. So projectiles or .354 to .357. Always check SAAMI.

Hornady has 2 projectiles labeled as 350 legend both are 355, which is .001 above minimum.

Not to say that someone hasn't done something weird. I would avoid handgun projectiles, they're not built for those speeds.

Not sure if this pertains but there are some barrel makers offering .350 Legend pre-fits in .357 bore. I know of one gent that has one & is using .358 Hornady SP with some success.
