35 Whelen reduced loads

I am looking to shoot some 180 grain .357 bullets in my whelen as plinking loads. Not sure where to look for working/safe loads.
I have H4895 that can be used as low as 60% from what I have seen but nothing from any sort of manual. Also have some sr4759 but I am pretty sure it is a little old. Sticker price on the cans is $6.49

It’s on the Hodgdon site. 180 grn, max load 60grns - 40%=36grns H4895.

But I prefer Trail Boss, if You can get it. You fill the case 100% below Your bullet seating depth, and that’s it. Ready to go. It’s totally safe, very low pressure. Don’t compress the load because that reduces accuracy. Check the Hogdgon site for further information.

I run a reduced load in my .358 Win using 200 gr Hor SP & H4895 (IIRC its 30-32 grains). My deer load is the same bullet with 44 grains of H4895. I love the powder but haven't seen it around in 2-3 years.

Maybe one of you guys could post a link to the info on the Hodgon site as I have been all over it looking for that info. I was pleased to find an unopened pound of H4895 so I have a place to start. Also looking for a place to use up 3 pounds of SR4759.
Thank you guys for the info so far it is a huge help.

I have/had some youth hunters here in louisiana 35 whelen is allowed during the primitive weapon season anyhow full load lil much for a lil one, saw this and some other info, we have used this load in single shot H&R for a decade now it is no joke either on game: 30-31gr H110 pushes a .357 180 gr xtp 2000-2100fps
"For hunting light game under 60kg (130lb) the .35 Whelen can be loaded with .357 magnum bullets which in many rifles produce excellent accuracy over short ranges. Loads can either be reduced to produce youth loads with low recoil, giving excellent performance on lighter game or loaded to full velocities to increase range. Hornady’s 158 and 180 grain XTP bullets can be loaded to between 2200-2400fps for a light game load. Results on game are reasonably consistent with the XTP bullets producing clean kills and some room for error. Top loads are capable of launching the 158 grain bullet at around 3100fps and the 180 grain bullet at 2900fps. While it would be natural to expect spectacular results with the XTP at these speeds, these bullets do not produce outstanding results and wound channels are much the same as at lower velocities but with less and sometimes unreliable penetration."

Lots of cast bullet shooters use 10-15 grains of Unique under pistol-weight bullets. Works fine for jacketed as well. Recoil is extremely light and groups are good, but POI is usually 6-12" low beyond about 50 yards. I used Hornady XTPs. Both versions shot well but I chose the flat-point because it's designed to work between 1,150-1,750 fps.

FWIW the #4 Lyman cast handbook calls for 4759 with 195 gr cast. I dont see why the data couldn't be used as a starting place for your 180s. Start load is 27gr @ 1935fps @ 20,200 cup to max at 34.7gr @ 2337fps @ 42,400cup. RP brass & 9 1/2s.

A year or two back, I used Lyman data with the last of my 4759 to fireform 358 Norma from 300 WinMag brass using cast 250s @ about 1800 or 1900fps & had a fun afternoon shooting rocks & clay pigeons on the 50 & 100 yd butts.

SR4759 was always cheaper than the regular IMR powders because it came in 8oz cans rather than pounders. My can, from the early 90s says $6 & change on the sticker.

I have tried "the load" (13 gr of Red Dot) under 180 XTPs & 200 gr RN, it was very accurate in my .358 Win. Now I'm having the same problem finding RD as I am H4895!
